4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and disturbing., 11 Sep 2006

This review is from: The Glass Cell (Paperback)
Philip Carter is serving time for a crime he did not commit. While in the can, he is tricked by a fellow inmate and ends up being strung up by his thumbs by the brutal guards for forty eight hours in solitaray confinement. He thumbs are disfigured and he gets hooked on the morphine that the doc gives him to control the constant throbbing pain he feels.
While he is in prison he is visited regularly by his beautiful wife, Hazel, but he becomes suspicious that she is having an affair with Sullivan, a lawyer friend who is supposed to be fighting his case.
The book is especially gripping in the first half where Highsmith convincingly details the unwritten rules, brutality and mindnumbing repetion of prison life. But the suspense doesn't let off when Carter finally is released. He is hounded by a man who tells him his wife is an adulterer and he doesn't know what to believe...
This book has a strong narrative thrust, typical of Highsmith. You turn the pages because you want to find out how Carter will survive prison and what will happen if he gets out.
If you've read the "Ripliad" and are hungry for more great suspense, this is a winner.
