Product Description

Product Description
Monty Bodkin's wooing of Gertrude Butterwick on the R.M.S. Atlantic is not progressing as it should. And the cause of all the trouble is Miss Lotus Blossum, the brightest star in Hollywood's firmament. The easy camaraderie of Miss Blossom, coupled with the idea that Monty is the only person who can send the errant Ambrose back to her welcoming arms, is causing Mr Bodkin moments of acute distress.

From the Back Cover
A P.G. Wodehouse novel

Seize this wonderful chance to embark on a Wodehousian voyage on the luxurious liner S.S. Atlantic – in the company of Monty Bodkin, whose passion for Gertrude Butterwick knows no bounds (except those set by the wild-at-heart Hollywood starlet Lotus Blossom and her pet alligator). Also aboard are a movie mogul, the centre-forward for the All-England ladies hockey team and the two Tennyson brothers (one of whom has been mistaken for the late poet laureate and given a fat movie contract…). Also a chatty steward, and a mouse doll in which all manner of things can be hidden. This is Wodehouse afloat – a voyage of pure delight. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Funniest Books in the Canon, 12 Feb 2004
By T. F. Neal "tfn3" (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Great books unsually start with great 1st sentences, and Luck of the Bodkins doesn't disappoint with this classic Wodehouse gem: "Into the face of the young man who sat on the terrace of the Hotel Magnifique at Cannes there had crept a look of furtive shame, the shifty hangdog look which announces that an Englishman is about to talk French." How can you possibly put a book down that starts like that! And it only gets better.

The eponomous hero Monty Bonkin is also a minor character in the Blandings novel "Heavy Weather. " This book picks up right where we left him at the end of that book making it a sequel of sorts though you defininately do not have to have read "Heavy Weather" first. Set in London, New York and Hollywood this is a great farce, which will keep you laughing to the end. Another great thing about this is that it the longest Wodehouse novel I've come across at 358pgs. so there's more to love.

Most importantly, make sure you pick this novel up (as well as the other Wodehouse books available) in the exquisite Everyman Library edition -- the beautifully designed, well crafted uniform editions that will last for generations and only cost a pound more than the paperback pocket books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, 13 Aug 2006
By WJ (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
This book is unique in Wodehouse's canon in being set almost entirely on a trans-Atlantic liner. The usual Wodehousian elements are here in abundance: lovers' misunderstandings, expensive jewellery, destitute young men trying to find money, but two central ingredients - a loquacious ship-steward and a brown plush Mickey Mouse - are probably not to be found elsewhere.

The intricate interactions and schemings of all the characters make the plot hilariously complex even for a Wodehouse novel. The high standard of writing is maintained throughout and the pace rarely slackens.

Only a couple of things may be said against the book. The eponymous hero is rather undistinctive, but the supporting cast more than compensates for his lack of individuality and provides most of the comedy and machinations. The ending is a little dragged out, but it is perhaps necessary for tying all the loose ends together.

In fine, anyone who enjoys Wodehouse's brand of humour will doubtless delight in this story. It may be recommended especially to those who wish to find Wodehouse outside London clubs and country-houses.
