From the Back Cover

89475-8

Security consultant Linda McCarthy shows:

  • How breaches occurred
  • What steps were taken to deal with them-and how well they worked
  • What steps could have been taken to prevent the crisis

There's nothing academic about network security when it's late at night and some hacker is rummaging through your R&D files. If you don't want that 3 a.m. phone call, and you don't want your company's strategic plans in tomorrow's Wall Street Journal, now's the time to prevent it from happening to you.

In this book, you'll watch as real network administrators track hacker intrusions. You'll see firsth and how companies struggle with security problems caused by poor training, lack of management support, hidden agendas, and careless intranet development. You'll find checklists of preventive security measures you can take right now-and lists of tools that can help. Above all, you'll find insight into the all-too-human security flaws that make corporate intranets an easy target for hackers.

"Linda McCarthy's book not only blends statistics with real life stories to good effect, but discusses and documents crucial items such as the importance of a security policy, the impact of organizational politics, and actual transcripts of break-ins. Read the book-it will help you understand security in the real world. And when all is said and done, that's saying a lot, isn't it?" --Dan Farmer, Security Researcher

"In addition to accurate and scary war stories, this book is chock-full of practical advice that anyone can benefit from." --Marcus J. Ranum, CEO, Network Flight Recorder

5.0 out of 5 stars Good primer on basic security strategies., 10 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I have a small, growing company that is just becoming aware of it's need for greater security implementation. I picked this book up because I wanted to be able to converse more effectively with the folks who are implementing a security strategy for the greater organization. This book helped to build my confidence in asking the right questions of the experts, because I am NOT a computer security expert. I was able to understand the big picture about the importance of security and what that means. It's a good primer on basic security strategies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners and execs, NOT for technical info, 26 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Don't look here AT ALL if you want technical knowledge, but I'd recommend it for a plain English introduction to security. Well written book, I thought, mainly b/c it matches my philosophy that security is more about people and (implemented) policies than about techie details. Of course, the techie details are absolutely essential (and way more fun for me), but security isn't improved for any period of time unless the organization is committed to security. That becomes obvious the first time you try social engineering. The author gives plenty of real world examples to support this holistic view.

5.0 out of 5 stars i liked it so much i bought fifty copies!, 24 Feb 1999
By A Customer
The book is terrific. I like the mix of case studies and technical content. I really wanted to know the names of the actual companies mentioned in the book.

I liked is to much that I bought fifty copies to pass out to friends and customers, then my company hired the author to do a series of seminars.
