Product Description

Product Description

For senior/graduate-level courses in Discrete-Time Signal Processing. THE definitive, authoritative text on DSP — ideal for those with an introductory-level knowledge of signals and systems. Written by prominent, DSP pioneers, it provides thorough treatment of the fundamental theorems and properties of discrete-time linear systems, filtering, sampling, and discrete-time Fourier Analysis. By focusing on the general and universal concepts in discrete-time signal processing, it remains vital and relevant to the new challenges arising in the field —without limiting itself to specific technologies with relatively short life spans.

FEATURES

  • NEW—Provides a new chapter organization.
  • NEW—Material on:
    • Multi-rate filtering banks.
    • The discrete cosine transform.
    • Noise-shaping sampling strategies.
  • NEW—Includes several dozen new problem-solving examples that not only illustrate key points, but demonstrate approaches to typical problems related to the material.
  • NEW—Contains a wealth of "combat tested" problems which are the best produced over decades of undergraduate and graduate signal processing classes at MIT and Georgia Tech.
  • NEW—Problems are completely reorganized by level of difficulty into separate categories:
    • Basic Problems with Answers to allow the user to check their results, but not solutions (20 per chapter).
    • Basic Problems — without answers.
    • Advanced Problems.
    • Extension Problems — start from the discussion in the book and lead the reader beyond to glimpse some advanced areas of signal processing.
  • Covers the history of discrete-time signal processing as well as contemporary developments in the field.
  • Discusses the wide range of present and future applications of the technology.
  • Focuses on the general and universal concepts in discrete-time signal processing.
  • Offers a wealth of problems and examples.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly universal first textbook on DSP, 15 May 2001
By balaji@ee.duke.edu (Duke Univ, NC, USA) - See all my reviews
This book has been the most used textbook for a first course on Signal Processing. The lucid explanations and physical insights presented are essential to the successful understanding of DSP. The material is however clearly intended for a first course on the subject and furthermore does not give as much practical ('hands on', Matlab demonstration) kind of exercises/examples for the student to try out himself. This approach is followed widely in other modern texts on DSP(eg by Sanjit Mitra etc) However this book is a sheer classic for its clarity and elegant explanations, and no other book is nearly as easy to read as this in the opinion of this reviewer.

For another good introductory textbook on DSP Please see the text by Proakis et al.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bible on DSP, 5 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This is the book we used on EE undergraduate study 4 years a go. It is always the main source for DSP topic. The book goes into deep mathematical theory and teaches the material in a structured way. Not good for those people who want to implement a DFT in a programming language, but it is good for those who wonder why we compute DFT.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for studying discrete time signals., 25 Mar 2001
By A Customer
The material in this book is so well organized that it provides flexibility to be used in both undergraduate and graduate level. Some additions to the previous edition of the book, like expanded coverage on multi-rate signal processing and discussion of the cosine transform, made the book a great up-to-date resource for the people studying signal processing.

I'm sure that every one in engineering, dealt with signal processing, already knows Oppenheim's reputation. That leaves nothing to be told about the book.
