Product Description

Product Description
Provides comprehensive, practical description and discussion of the functions of personnel management, supported by extensive illustrative material and evidence from current practice. The text has a logical structure: each part begins with a chapter on the strategic aspects of personnel management within the wider organisation; this is followed by chapters covering the core operational aspects; the final chapter in each part covers the practical skills of interaction needed by a personnel manager. Beyond updating the material to reflect legislative changes, current business practice and emerging issues of professional debate, this revision has introduced a range of assessment material and new illustrative material, pedagogical and text design enhancements, and improved lecturer support material.

From the Back Cover

Managing employee absence, maintaining a healthy ‘work-life balance’, and developing ethical and socially responsible codes of behaviour at work: many of the most topical areas of debate in organisations are rooted in issues of human resource management.

The 6th edition of this market-leading textbook provides detailed exploration and analysis of these contemporary issues, as well as providing comprehensive coverage of all the core elements of HRM. There is a range of useful features to engage the reader’s interest and assist in learning from the text:

  • seven Focus on Skills sections develop specific areas of practical HR expertise
  • short Window on Practice illustrations put theory into recognisable context
  • individual and group Activities encourage critical reflection and review
  • practice Examination Questions at the end of each chapter

A companion website at www.pearsoned.co.uk/torrington provides extra cases and articles taken from the Financial Times, self-assessment questions for each chapter and links to other useful websites.

This book is suitable for students taking HRM modules on both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, as well as for professional qualifications.

Derek Torrington is Emeritus Professor of Management, University of Management. Laura Hall and Stephen Taylor are both Senior Lecturers in Human Resource Management at Manchester Metropolitan University as well as national examiners for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

The real life examples, quotes and case studies, together with the reference to the web-site links, will undoubtedly help to enhance the suitability of this text to a range of courses.  I will certainly recommend this text to my students.

Kirsten Krauth, Coventry Business School

I have used this text over many years, both in the UK on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and overseas on MBA programmes, and have come to rely on its comprehensive mix of academic and practical insights into the world of HR. It is easy to follow, engaging in style, and keeps the reader’s interest up.

John Martin, Fellow of Hull University

5.0 out of 5 stars a classic, 7 Feb 2009
I have used this book during my undergraduate and postgraduate business + management degree.

It is of such depth and clarity that I almost needed no other sources for most of my essays + exams. The recommended readings are all essential, the theories mentioned more up to date than most other textbooks in the field (and I have looked at quite a few during my courses) and the structure + examples are very relevant.

It is definitely better than Beardwell's or Marchington's textbooks, and only matched by Bratton + Gold's textbook (which has a stronger practical focus I find but does manage to put theories into a broader context sometimes).

This is one of the best textbooks I have used during my academic career.

4.0 out of 5 stars its good!!, 16 Dec 2003

The book: The book is a great utility for readers of degree level or lower to really grab an understanding of what differing topics in HR are roughly about, such as equality & opportunity within the work place or payment structures anything! a good solid book

the problem: The problem is only related to the book (kinda like a 7th cousin!) and that is to really succeed in your studies or in the workplace you must read wider range of texts as this book can only cover so much within a topic without making it too daughting!!
