Product Description

Any professional programmer who wants to learn C++, including applications programmers, software engineers, system architects, and product maintenance personnel. Any student learning C++ or object-oriented design; classes in algorithms, data structures or general software engineering will also use this book if the course's application language is C++.

To write C++ code that really meets its potential, programmers need to understand both C++ and object-oriented design methodologies. That's the premise behind Moving to C++ With Object-Oriented Design — unlike many other books, which teach either C++ or object-design, but not both. This comprehensive, practical tutorial, refined through years of teaching C++ to professional developers, is fully up-to-date, covering even new C++ features such as templates and exception handling.

Learn ANSI C++ right from the start!

If you're going to learn C++, learn it right from the start! Navigating C++ and Object-Oriented Design is the first book that teaches ANSI C++ and the object-oriented techniques that make C++ a software development breakthrough.

This comprehensive tutorial reflects the authors' extensive experience teaching C++ to professional developers. Start with the clearest introduction to object modeling you'll ever read. Then learn all the essentials of C++ and more advanced topics such as exceptions, namespaces, and dynamic memory allocation.

Next, discover C++ classes, the basic building block of object-oriented design. Through proven analogies and examples, the authors introduce containment and inheritance, overloading, templates, RTTI, and exception handling. And, the authors' unique presentation on multiple inheritance will give you invaluable insights into this complex topic.

Learn to apply C++ and object-oriented techniques to real-world development. Discover how to design classes effectively using the authors' class design boilerplate. Understand how to design container classes. Walk through class designs using the powerful OMT methodology.

Navigating C++ and Object-Oriented Design is one of the first C++ tutorials that covers in detail powerhouse ANSI C++ features like:

  • Namespaces, bool, member templates, and RTTI
  • Explicit, export, and nothrow versions of new and delete
  • The IOStream Library and Standard Template Library

Why learn C++ simply as a "better C" when you can write C++ code that really meets its potential? One book shows you how: Navigating C++ and Object-Oriented Design!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 14 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This is the best C++ book for advanced coders I have seen. And I've sen a lot. All concepts and applications are explained thoroughly and comprehensively. If you were an 'advanced C++ developer' before, then one or two readings of this books will land we easily into the 'C++ Guru' status. The only slight minus point is that STL is not explained very fully, but that is only a small minus point, as STL definitely warrants a book to itself. Hats of to the Andersons.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for intermediate/experienced C/C++ developers., 29 Oct 1999
By gary.hooper@ft.com (London, England) - See all my reviews
I have been coding in C++ for a while now but this book really helped me to improve my understanding of object oriented concepts. It's good to see a book that covers both (low level) design issues as well as the underlying language. However, it is important to note that if you are not familiar with C and the basic concept of objects then this is not the book for you. For an experienced programmer this actually makes the book a much better read as you don't get bogged down in detailed descriptions of simple language features.

The book is both complete (advanced use of templates, new ANSI features such as RTTI and the STL, etc) and thorough. The book is also well written and readable, there are too many examples of C++ books produced by people who may be C++ guru's but who cannot clearly explain a difficult concept. (The person who invents a computer language is not always the best person to write about it.)

The only area I would like to have seen covered in more detail is that of inheritance which is left until near the end of the book. (This may be asking a lot as the book is already 800 pages long.)

Each major new concept is dealt with in a new chapter and explained in detail together with useful examples. The code examples are of high quality and demonstrate topics that are important in professional projects, such as different approaches to manual memory management techniques. What was particularly useful was that all the code examples and answers to exercises are included on a CD-ROM. Being able to "play" with the code yourself really does improve your understanding of the concepts involved. I also liked the way that the book described several simple commonly used classes early on and built upon those examples as new concepts were introduced.
