5.0 out of 5 stars Money is not wasted on this book, 15 Jun 2001
By A Customer
As an MSc IT student I relied heavily on Deitel books to help me understad the OOP concept using Java. I love buying computing and IT books and have certainly spent a small fortune as a student and afterwards. With so many books, I found the general structure of writing was either too basic or too advanced and lacked the technique and patience for a gradual increase in the depth of information transferred to the reader. This is, certainly, not the case with the Deitel books, to me the books were a bit of fresh air. The authors beautifully transfer their in-depth knowledge to their readers. I love the accompanied examples and the break-down of their code, which has certainly helped me understand a great deal of grey areas in coding and by the grace of God I finished my MSc and now lecturing the subject, thanks Deitel. After graduating, I was approached by another MSc student from a different university for private tuitions in Visual Basic, as a Java programmer I hesitantly accepted as the student had no prior knowledge of programming whatsoever, my first move was to buy the Visual Basic 6 : How To Program by Deitel and Deitel, I was learning the language as I was teaching it, well it is enough to say the student got an overall grade of 'B' in programming which was a core subject.

If I could issue a certificate of excellence for writing, Deitel and Deitel would be on the top of my list, please keep writing.

If you are serious about learning softwre development, then your first lesson is to buy this book. Money is not wasted on this book.

Mahmood Al-Sabbagh - Lecturer in Computing

4.0 out of 5 stars This is THE best introduction to VB I have read., 26 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This is one of the few programming books that isn't written by Sams or Que publishers ...and what a refreshing change! Thorough in it's content, it's takes the reader from the humble 'Hello World' app right thru to Active X controls, covering stuff like Graphics & Multimedia, File handling, User interface design, Web and Database programming en route -plus tons of other useful things. The authors REALLY know their stuff, and it shows; the 'learning by example' philosophy is evident throughout the book. And it works as well; the book is jam-packed with examples of code that are carefully set out AND explained. The authors also display patience, in that they've resisted the temptation to use a single example to teach several different programming concepts. Instead, each concise example attempts to teach a single concept only. Another plus is the 'Summary' at the end of each chapter which serves to hammer-in the topics covered, whilst also providing good background reading for the user + there are some very useful tips. The only thing missing is coverage of the Windows API functions, an important area ...but one that only becomes relevant once you enter the realms of 'Advanced' programming. In short, this is THE best introduction to VB I have read. It will sit comfortably on the lap of a new-comer to VB/programming, whilst providing a damn good read to those at the 'intermediate' level. If you want to learn VB fast, buy it! (you won't regret it).

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth buying, 12 Feb 2001
This is the 3rd VB book i've purchased and its an excellent book. This book is very different in the way it helps you to learn to program and develop problem solving skills. Taking you from the basics and progressing. A purchase well worth making. Deitel also produce excellent books in C, C++, java which i've now gone and bought.
