Product Description

Product Description

This book will fill the void for an introductory HP-UX books left by the many "generic" intro to UNIX books. That audience will include app. developers, application users and new syst. admins.

From the Back Cover

25853-3

HP-UX has taken off in popularity. As a result of this popularity there are many new HP-UX users. Some of these new HP-UX users have direct experience with other operating systems but have no direct experience with UNIX. Others have learned HP-UX “the hard way” , by experimenting. Still others have taken an HP-UX training course but are now relying on generic UNIX books to learn HP-UX. Learning the HP-UX Operating System is for all of these users.

This book doesn't waste a lot of time with the background of UNIX and comparing various UNIX implementations. Instead, the author gets right to what you need to know to be a productive HP-UX user.

The chapters in this book contain useful information and have names such as: Login and Password; The HP-UX File System; File System Related Commands; HP-UX Tools; HP-UX Networking; and Shell Programming.

This book leaves no stone unturned. From the basics such as login and password to advanced topics such as shell programming you'll be exposed to everything you need to be quickly productive with HP-UX.

2.0 out of 5 stars UNIX Starter guide - Not HP-UX Specific at all, 20 Nov 2000
I got this book hoping to learn some good stuff for a porting project I was working on - I have ported this code from Windows NT to AIX, Solaris and OS/390 Open Edition and I didn't know anything about HP-UX. I had to install a lot of software on the box as root user and I thought this book might give me some good tips and tricks... I was very wrong - this should be called "Beginning UNIX on HP-UX" Here's what I mean: There are 13 chapters - the last chapter is a command summary and chapter 10 is, get this, "The vi editor" (Thats chapter 10 out of 13 remember) I mean - vi in a book call "Learning the HP-UX operating system" - thats basic UNIX!! And on the back of the book they have the cheek to say : "This book leaves no stone unturned. From the basics, such as login and password to advanced topics......." And it's barely over 300 pages cover to cover !!

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money on this book, 14 Jul 2000
By A Customer
This book is definately not worth the £23 odd I paid for it. It is extremely basic , but not very good even for beginner,s as it quickly skirts over a handful of commands.I bought this book as it is recommended by HP themselves, why I do not know. If you are pursuing their certification this will be of no help at all. The content is as brief as possible and only covers the most simplist of commands such as cp and rm in any detail. Most people who need a good book on HP-UX will know these commands and will be very annoyed with buying this. I bought " teach youself Unix in 24 hours" last year which is obviously basic but covers far far more for a lot less money. My advice is to buy any other book onUnix as it will be better than this.
