To safeguard your company's data, think like a hacker!

When it comes to computer security, your livelihood and your company's future are on the line. It's not enough to simply follow a security “cookbook” : you need to get into the mind of your adversary, the hacker.

In Halting the Hacker, a leading Fortune 500 security consultant shows you the approaches and techniques hackers use to gain access, privileges, and control of your UNIX system. You'll learn to look at your system the way a hacker does, identifying potential vulnerabilities. You'll learn what specific countermeasures to take now. Even more important, you'll learn how to recognize and respond to future security concerns—before they become catastrophes. You'll discover:

  • How hackers transform minor oversights into major security breaches
  • How hackers cover their tracks while leaving “back doors” into your system
  • How to protect your system against disgruntled or dishonest insiders
  • How to detect break-ins—and what to do next

Halting the Hacker even includes an exclusive CD-ROM software library of tools to detect and eliminate security problems, and a comprehensive information archive on security and hacker-related topics.

If you're responsible for the security of a UNIX computer system, you're up against some extraordinarily smart and persistent adversaries. You need to even the odds. You need Halting the Hacker.

1.0 out of 5 stars Excitable but unrewarding guide to system security, 11 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This read more like a poorly written cold war thriller than a practical unix security guide. The author attempts unsuccessfully to whip the reader into a state of high excitement and paranoia about unix security. There are good tips in there, but it has more the feel of a inexpertly written tabloid article on hackers rather than a practical textbook. There are some nice practical examples, but the reader has to wade through a lot of gushing sensationalism reach them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Practical Guide to the insight of hacking !!!!, 18 Oct 2001
By A Customer
The book is well structured and set out. Each chapter simplifies the tactics used and abused by the hacker in an attack. I learned many things from this book and would recommend it to anyone who would like to know more about the subject and the good part is that you dont need to know alot or anything at all about hacking, this book takes you through step by step the thoughts and strategies used by the hacker. Strongly Recommended to learn from.

2.0 out of 5 stars In responce to the "elite hacker", 13 April 1998
By A Customer
Noticing the so called "hackers" word of disgust towards this book, I am left asking myself time and time again, was this book geared towards teaching the average joe to hack? Judging by it's content and brief description I thought not, instead it offers a somewhat quick, realistic view of how companies all across the net are being attacked, and in doing so it offers a somewhat indepth but easy to understand method of securing ones computer.
