4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Netbean version 5.0, 1 Aug 2006
By Roger Powell (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The copy I have received, unlike the previous reviewer, covers Netbeans 5.0. Also, the "Reviews From the Back Cover" (above) is taken from the earlier version of this book, which will no doubt confuse.

Netbeans IDE Field Guide (Second Edition) covers various elements that are new to or have been improved in Netbeans 5 including Matisse (Chapter 6), JSF and struts, code versioning (CVS), and more. Obviously the second edition is based heavily on the previous one and picking out the differences isn't that easy. The book had almost certainly gone to press before the authors could talk authoritatively about Java EE 5 but that does not detract from what the book does.

So enough defence, why should (or shouldn't) you buy this book? This is a guide to an IDE so obviously if you're not using Netbeans forget this book. However, if you are you'll be pleased to know that it's certainly not a software manual. Instead the chapters are generally written in a tutorial style that walks you through everything from creating your first simple Java application to using EJBs and web-services. (There are a great many step-by-step walk throughs.) It also covers the Mobility Pack (J2ME) and Netbeans' excellent Flow Designer. It covers Ant, performance testing and developing plug-ins.

You can tell I like this book! It's full of clear illustrations, good advice (e.g. about Java Blue Prints) it tells you how to use Netbeans to construct or import sophisticated software systems (e.g. web or enterprise services). It's constantly by my side or at least within reach and if you're new to Netbeans I could not imagine a better 'get you started' (and 'develop very sophisticated programs') guide.

I find it has a friendly uncluttered style and is easy to read. Great book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Too late, 23 May 2006

Why is a book on NB4.1 being published so long after NB5.0 has been out? Should have put back the publishing date 6 months and updated to 5.0
