2.0 out of 5 stars Small amount of useful info surrounded by lots of rubbish, 24 April 2004
By Nicholas Dunn (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This contains some useful techniques for improving your memory, readingand thinking. Unfortunately the useful stuff is buried amongst irrational,pseudo-scientific 'explanations' and comes complete with anecdotes aboutsomeone who dramatically improved their life/career/exam results by usingthe techniques. I presume the anecdotes are meant to act as evidence thatthe stuff works, but I just found them annoying.
The cover claims that'the latest scientific breakthroughs' will help you improve your memory, reading, thinking, etc. but the memory techniques described range from theones invented by the ancient Greeks and Romans to more recent methods thatgained wider use in sixteenth century Europe. Leaving aside the fact thatthese are not the 'latest' techniques, they will probably already befamiliar to many readers anyway.
There are also some frankly bizarreclaims made. We are told that you can improve storage space in your brainby telling and willing yourself to forget something at which point it willdisappear from your brain, leaving room for new memories. A later sectionin the book discusses how to spot when you are being misled by faultyarguments and misinformation giving argument by analogy as one of the wayspeople can be deceived (eg - it works this way for cats therefore it mustwork this way for dogs as well). This is good advice but if you apply toan earlier claim (that you can wake up at the same time every day, therefore your brain can be programmed like a computer, therefore you canremember things better or read more quickly just by telling yourself to doso) then you may find yourself having doubts if not laughing outloud.
If you want to extract the useful descriptions of how to improveyour memory, reading speed and improve the clarity of your thinking thenthe layout is very helpful, grouping the advice into separate grey boxeshelping you to avoid the padding and anecdotes in between. You will alsoneed to exercise your own judgement and discretion to weed out the badadvice. It is a book that can make you think and does provide some goodadvice and techniques - it's just a shame that there is also bad adviceand patronising writing style accompanying it - I've bought other booksabout learning/study skills and memory improvement which have been morehelpful.

1.0 out of 5 stars The book has no practical information, 7 April 1999
By A Customer
This book was terrible. I bought it in the hopes of learning something better than the normal mneumonic techniques;however, her book showed techniques that were impractical and plain dumb. For all those out there looking for a good book on memory that will really WORK!!!! Try Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas's The Memory Book. The techniques are easy to learn, but will take time to apply to information for school. However, you will be rewarded for your efforts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally... A well researched book without the sales pitch!, 9 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Folks.... I have wasted a good chunk of money on those memory boosters books, kits, and instant reading stuff. I wish I found this book back then. All you get in those high ticket seminars, kits and home study courses is here for less than $15.00(Tax included). I recommend this book to anyone. Scienice based facts, with none of the over hyped claims.
