5.0 out of 5 stars Go multi-platform easily with this book!, 19 Oct 2005
By H. Wiman "H. Wiman, PhD" (Stockholm, Sweden) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Finally it is here - the book that teaches you how trivial it is to develop software for multiple platforms with wxWidgets! I have been using wxWidgets for more than 5 years, so I admit - there was not very much that I did not already know. Still I am very happy with the book, because it is a good reference to have beside me while coding. However, the greatest potential of this book is to attract even more developers to this wonderful library. You will be amazed to learn that it is not a bit harder to develop for all major platforms than to just target one of them, so why wait?

5.0 out of 5 stars Agree, but, don't, 17 May 2005
By A Customer
I'm sure this WILL be a wonderful book. But it hasn't been published yet so I simply don't know. Which is why it surprises me to see a review of it including the statement that the reviewer's copy has been munched by his dog and he's going to order a second copy ;)

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing elemetary information and messy, 27 Dec 2006
By H. Nielsen - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have just read the two first chapters of this book and appendices A,B and C.

I am totally new to linux C++ programming and never touched wxWidgets before. But I have done a lot of programming on Windows and earlier on DOS, and also some webapplication and java programming on linux.

My first thoughts about this book is that it doesn't explain the basics. It doesn't tell you how to compile your programs and it is messy. It mixes instructions for windows with instructions for linux or mac and linux. This makes it really hard to get a grip on what the book is really trying to tell.

It introduces a lot of code, but it doesn't tell you how to compile it and run the code. It even suggests so many tools and IDEs, there is no telling where to start. The specific instructions are too overall to help the beginner realize what to do.

For instance, it tells you to paste some config into a window with four or five textboxes, but it doesn't tell you which textbox. This is really bad.

This book stands out as a disgrace to the wonderful toolkit wxWidgets is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
This book is very good for beginning wxwidgets, the first two chapters are great, but the rest is just a copy of the docs that can be found online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damned fine book
If you want to write cross platform software with an attractive widget set, you have the choice of Qt (which Win32 users need to pay for currently), gtk or wxWidgets. Read more
