5.0 out of 5 stars A whole lot of Java., 9 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This book is a lot of work! I've spent six months going through it and have only really scratched the surface. You really need a lecturer to guide you through the material, otherwise you could end up getting bogged down - there's a lot of detail. An excellent reference book too, easy to read, up-to-date and reliable. The CD contains lots of code examples, plus all the programs in the book to save you the trouble of typing them all out.

A beginner will get the best start possible, but will need guidance, and the experienced will find it a valuable reference book. I've worked on it from the 4th to this 6th edition and it's the best Java textbook I've seen so far. Get the solutions too, if you can. But beware! The 5th and 6th editions differ in structure and content quite a bit more than you might think. A 5th Ed solutions book will not be much use with this 6th Ed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Java how to progame 6, 19 Jul 2007
By RS (UK) - See all my reviews
This book is part of a taught course and there is no support for the retail customer unless you wish to pay £Hundreds for said course his book starts off well and covers the architecture of OOD/OOP. Many of the exercises in the book didn't work and I just could not find a solution, It may be in the errata (if you can find it). In the later chapters the technology is void and out of date (mySQL 4, Tomcat 5) and no longer valid. Avoid it like the plague.

4.0 out of 5 stars How To Program JAVA Fourth Edition, 26 Jan 2006
By Dave "Dave123" (Merseyside) - See all my reviews
I've read quite a few JAVA Books learning JAVA and i thought SAMS Teach Yourself JAVA 2 in 21 days was good, BUT!...Your book: How to Program JAVA Fourth Edition just Beats them ALL!!!
Fantastic Layout, loads of examples with a topic, and that topic is widely covered so that if you don't 'get it', then the book gives you enough examples so that you do in the end!
I Love the Colour in the pages and the thick quality of the pages too!!
A nice all-in-one book for the beginner!
