5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, suitable for beginners to OOP/Java,great style, 16 Jun 2000
I am a beginner to OOP and Java, and have learnt more from this book in 2 weeks than 6 months of the Wrox Visual C++ book. The style is very clear, and based on the standard format of describing how a particular example program works. There are lots of great little hints and tips to break up the text into more bite size chunks. At the end of each chapter there is a complete summary WHICH IS EXCELLENT, self-review exercises ALSO EXCELLENT and hands-on programming exercises. The summary and self-review exercises work really well to refresh your memory when you flick back to earlier chapters. The great thing is that you are running windows programs from about page 3. I managed to get through the first 600 pages in a month - it took me 6 months to do that with the Wrox C++ course (which is soooo boring). The book is not at all dry, and the little quotations at the beginning of each chapter are neat. The first CDROM includes Java itself, plus 2 development environments. The cyberclassroom thing is ok, and it is nice to hear the author give an introduction to each chapter... but I'm not a big fan of reading books on the screen, so I haven't used it much. No book is perfect, but this one comes close.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for beginning programmers. Nice CD ROM., 18 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I have used this book in a one semester course for introductory programming at the Technical University of Denmark. Most students like it, some find it too voluminous. Personally I think it is very pedagogical, exhaustive and well written. There is a lot of exercises and survey materials in the book and a big project example. Some illustrations and surveys giving computerscience fundamentals is missing. Language reference must be found elsewhere, e.g. in the JDK Reference. The CD ROM is very useful giving soundfiles with code-walkthrough's for all the programexamples. A less attractive soundquality is a little annoying allthough fully understandable. Also the user interface to the CD is a little out-of-date. In all a recommendable book and CD.
