2.0 out of 5 stars Book for Professionals NOT For Undergraduate Students (in my opinion), 16 Jan 2009

Me as a first year undergraduate student studying Electronic Engineering at university in London found this book written in a way that only professionals can actually understand the topics easily but surely NOT the undergraduate students.

As a person who had no idea about the data communications and computer networks decided to study this textbook because it was recommended to us. I was actually expecting to read a book that can give really firm fundamental ideas about the topic. Only the first 25 - 30 pages were quite easy to understand and written for undergraduate students and gives foundation topics in an easy-to-understand manner. But after that I completely lost myself mainly because the topics and hardness level starts to increase so quickly and talks about very professional topics such as information theory and so on...

Another worst thing about this book is that the diagrams are very very poor and not very easy to understand (well that is my opinion anyway - your approach can be completely different) and the book doesn't include too much diagrams which I believe should have been included because it really helps to consolidate the main points and helps the reader to visulise and remember the topic. Also there is too much text and not properly designed (I mean like some important points are not bullet pointed).

Moreover this book is far more expensive than some other much better textbooks talking about the same subject and contain more information, topics, diagrams and so on and also gives very firm fundamental ideas about the subject.

Lastly another bad point of this book is that if you attemp to solve the exercise questions at the end of each chapter (which I encourage you to do) unfortunately you will NOT know the answer of the questions because they are NOT included in the book which I believe discourages students to attempt the questions. Especially for calculation-required questions, there must be definitely answers given but IT IS NOT.

Again In My Opinion this book is a terrible book for undergraduate students especially if you are new to the subject. There are much much better books which are cheper, gives more fundamental ideas, more knowledge, more topics about the subject and explains in an easy-to-understand way with very useful diagrams.

Don't Waste Your Money On This Expensive, Thin (only 400 pages) and Useless Book (In My Opinion Of Course) Written for Professionals Rather than the Students. This book is I think written for Business Purposes (to make money) rather than to be a useful resource for undergraduate students. Buy another giant, useful and cheap textbook.
