Several books teach COM and COM+, but this is one of the first to focus on COM/COM+ from a developer's perspective. Using case studies and practical programming examples, the author uncovers COM and COM+ in detail -- and shows how to avoid the traps and pitfalls that await the unwary. COM/COM+ expert Pradeep Tapadiya presents techniques for designing interfaces, building COM servers, synchronization, security, transactions, event notification issues, working with queued components, and administering distributed object environments. 4.0 out of 5 stars One of the most up to date books on COM+, 27 Oct 2000
I have read some books on COM and COM+, and I found this one interesting and comprehensive, although not too deep. This book can be useful, if you need to know COM+ but you don't need to be a super-expert. But, probably, such a book doesn't even exist, today. If you are new to COM, buy also Essential COM by Don Box (definitely the best book ever published, on this subject).

3.0 out of 5 stars An OK book on COM+, 23 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This book is useful if you haven't done COM programming, or as a refresher for COM, since the first 225 pages talk about the COM architecture. COM+ is also covered, but it appeared to me to be mostly re-arrangements of several magazine articles, for example Don Box's May 1999 and September 1999 articles in MSJ (although he does cite these articles in his references section). The book is also advertised as a practical guide to COM+ programming using ATL and Visual C++--well, in over 270 pages of text that I have read through carefully he makes very little reference to ATL, which was annoying and very misleading (in my mind).

So if you are looking for a book that will give you an in-depth look at ATL and COM+ programming, I would recommend looking for another book. However, if you want a fairly quick introduction to COM and COM+ then this book is worth a look in.
