Review

"The depth is excellent. Students will find the book very readable. The breadth of coverage is impressive." — Dr. Tracy Chapman, Colorado School of Mines

"The use of examples to support the theory is excellent. The writing style is eminently readable; serious but not boring!" — Dr. Peter Hayward, IBM UK Laboratories

"Examples are used to very good effect. This includes the very brief examples used to illustrate a single point or concept." — Dr. David Mathias, Ohio State University

Product Description

For an undergraduate course in Object-Oriented Programming or a course in Intermediate Java Programming.

Appealing to programmers and non-programmers alike, this complete introduction to Java shows students how to use this versatile and popular object-oriented programming language as a primary tool in many different aspects of their programming work (not just for creating programs with graphical content within Web pages), and includes complete descriptions of the fundamental elements of Java with step-by-step instructions on how to compile and run a program. Well-organized, clearly written, and visually engaging, it gives students real hands-on experience as it guides them through all of Java's functions and capabilities—reinforcing their understanding with periodic reviews and helping them see Java's everyday applicability through many interesting case studies. Emphasizing the importance of good programming style—particularly the need to maintain an object's integrity from outside interference—it teaches students how to harness the power of Java in object-oriented programming, and enables them to create their own interesting and practical every-day applications.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent content, but difficult to get into, 4 Oct 2000
By A Customer
David Barnes is an excellent lecturer and I learnt a lot from him last year during my course. His passion for Java and his knowledge of the language has been tranferred from lectures directly into this book and it is better for it. Reading this text will allow you to follow the exact course that first year students took at one of the best Computer Science course in England.

The few problems with the book include the fact that the book is rather too difficult to get into. Nearing two inches thick and almost completely text, you have to be concentrating fully to understand what is written. If your mind wanders you will stumble later on in the book. You also need access to the internet to fully understand principals explained, because all source code is available through download only.

However, if you want to learn Java then this is one of the best books out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars I passed David's Java exam so his book must have worked :-), 28 Jul 2000

I bought the book about halfway through my academic year and wished it had been released earlier. The examples are excellent, taking a single point or concept and explaining it clearly. Hope David sells enough books to buy that Ferrari...

Having used David Barnes' draft notes for the book whilst learning Java last year, I eagerly awaited the release of this book. Read more
