Product Description

Product Description

Today's hottest networking certification is Cisco's CCIE program -- but only 30% of testers pass this tough exam on the first try. This book focuses on the in-depth, hands-on internetwork configuration and troubleshooting that are the toughest part of the exam. Begin with the physical and data-link foundations of Cisco-based internetworks, including configuration and troubleshooting frame-relay, ISDN/DDR and the Catalyst 5000. Understand key IP address planning issues, including routing protocol configuration for RIP, IGRP, OSPF and EIGRF. Review configuring IP exterior gateway protocols, non-IP routing protocols (including IPX, AppleTalk and DecNet), and non-routable protocols, including SNA and NetBIOS. Finally, master the key aspects of controlling and filtering traffic with access lists, access expressions, queue lists, dialer lists and routemaps. This hands-on course covers both technologies and test-taking strategies, helping you pass the exam -- and get results long afterwards.

Don't just cram for the exam. Develop a structured study plan for CCIE certification. You know attaining CCIE certification is tough. Only 20% of candidates pass it the first time. Improve your odds dramatically by applying the proven test preparation techniques described in this book. Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIE's provides a systematic roadmap to guide candidates in expanding their internetworking knowledge base as well as refining internetwork "issue spotting", troubleshooting and analysis skills.

You'll learn key test-taking strategies as you review all major protocols. By categorizing and ordering internetworking topics, you will build a systematic study scheme. End-of chapter checklists help you advance as your knowledge base grows. The six levels covered in this book are:

  • Level I: Physical and Data Link Layer (Frame-Relay, ISDN, Catalyst 5000, ATM).
  • Level II: IP Addressing, IP IGP Routing and Route Redistribution (RIP, IGRP, EIGRP and OSPF).
  • Level III: IP Exterior Gateway Routing Protocols (BGP4).
  • Level IV: Non-IP Routing Protocols (IPX, AppleTalk, DECNET).
  • Level V: Non-IP Routing Protocols (Transparent Bridging, IRB, SRB, SRT and DLSw+).
  • Level VI: Managing Internetwork Traffic (Access-lists, Queuing and Route-Maps).

All topics covered will involve a hands-on format including:

  • Step-by-step configuration explanations.
  • Expert use of Cisco IOS Show commands.
  • Detailed analysis using Cisco IOS debugging tools.

After you've used this book as a roadmap to prepare for the CCIE exam, you'll continue to treasure it as a comprehensive reference for both technical reference and problem-solving.

2.0 out of 5 stars Turgid prose style and poor layout, 31 Aug 1999
By A Customer
There is a lot of information in this book but you might as well read the Cisco web site pages - or the local telephone directory for a more interesting evening! There are not the drill questions that would really bring the information home and the important information is submerged within some of the most impenetrable verbage ever to have crossed the Atlantic.

Obviously rushed out to catch the Cisco Certification rush, I would not recommend that you rush to buy this book - at least not with your own money!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Your CCIE, 13 Aug 2001
This book is good ,no this book is great. Very explanatory, good examples, excellent scenarios. With a thousand pages and thirty three chapters it is quite a chunk but very interestingly delivered. I feel so much confident having gone 75% of the book. The only thing is that i wish it had more diagrams

You ain't serious about your CCIE untill you have this one in your kit

5.0 out of 5 stars This is THE Book for passing CCIE, 15 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I have worked with a few people who have studied (and passed) CCIE. We all found that our copies of "Caslow" formed the backbone of our studies. It's the "dog's proverbials"! We would all like to thank the author for such a "spot-on" book.
