5.0 out of 5 stars This is great!, 15 Dec 2002
By A Customer
I purchased this in the States and am so glad I did. I'm only annoyed that I didn't have it sooner, since I was ready to swear blind there were features StarOffice didn't have, which simply weren't easy to find. However, they're very well documented in this book. It's what I needed for the last several months while I was figuring things out the hard way. Finally managed to make headers and footers and page numbering work properly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best. This is the way to learn StarOffice., 12 Dec 2002
By A Customer
I've been badgering everyone I know to get this book, and finally one of my badgerees said I should tell everyone on Amazon and stop bugging my friends. All right, here it is.

I started using StarOffice two years ago at work and it was a bit of a job at first. Everyone else was in the same boat. Then my manager ordered these Companion books and I started looking at the index every time I needed to do something. Shazam. It was there. I looked up something else. It was there too (doing cross references in Writer). And when I needed to print multiple headings out of Calc on multiple pages, there it was, in the index and with all the steps to do it, very simple and clear. My favorite is the "Turning Off Annoying Features" section. It showed me how to turn off all automatica features that waste your time.

So eventually we all figured out that StarOffice actually can do a lot of things, and it's not that hard, but you can't figure it out as easily without a book. It's easy when you know how. And this book tells you how. Buy it before you lose anymore hair or flatten your forehead anymore.

This is the update to the 5.2 book, which I also used extensively, and which is also very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really well done, and easy to find information, 30 Jan 2003
By Marian Quimby (Lancashire) - See all my reviews
I am very pleased with this book, the "StarOffice 6.0 Office Suite Companion." It is an excellent balance of clarity and detail and while I cannot vouch for everyone I find that the "tech level" is just right for me. I am an experienced computer user so do not need a "Dummies" book, which this is not, but I do need direct, clear instructions to tell me what I want to do. Which this book provides.

I was most delighted by coverage of setting up databases, which was clear and provided me everything I needed without mistaking me for a system administrator who cares deeply about views and joins. The database works for StarOffice have changed in this version and I was rather alarmed at the prospect of learning a new system, but the instructions were quite nice and I had no trouble at all linking to my Access databases.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants a supplement to the existing StarOffice manual, which is small and does not cover enough. This book also has many excellent illustrations while the StarOffice manual has almost no pictures.
