Book Description
The Jini™ 1.1 framework- a practical, example-driven introduction for real-world application developers, from the author of the worlds #1 Jini book!
Real-world guidelines for Jini 1.1 application design, development, and administration.
Extensive code examples -- including advanced techniques utilizing JavaSpaces, wrapper code, and more.
Lead author wrote the worlds #1 Jini book, Core Jini! With the release of Jini 1.1, Jini technology is rapidly maturing into the worlds #1 solution for networking next-generation devices of all kinds. Structured for simplicity and accessibility, this book answers the key questions developers have about Jini -- presenting up-to-the-minute techniques, proven development guidelines, and real code for building reliable, high-performance systems. The authors begin with a high-level introduction to the philosophy and principles of Jini technology, utilizing simple diagrams to explain key concepts such as process and message control. Next, they cover the Jini Framework in greater depth, reviewing the structure of Jini programs and the role of clients, servers, RMI, and Jini Services. This section concludes with a start-to-finish application- a Jini repository browser that gives developers new insight into the workings and potential of Jini systems. In Part III, the authors put Jini to work, walking through several simple examples, demonstrating how to form Jini services by wrapping pre-existing components, and how to leverage advanced JavaSpaces technologies. For all Java developers interested in Suns Jini technology framework, and for all implementers of next-generation wireless and networked devices.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's just examples, but at least it admits it, 28 Oct 2003
If you learn better from an example than from a dry reference, this book will be a great way to get into Jini.

It has little by the way of background explanation or reference material, but the example code (and the instructions on installing, configuring and running the various parts of Jini) are comprehensive and detailed, building into two interesting case studies - a chat system and a distributed remote storage system demonsrating all the Jini features.

For discussion, hints, tips and experience get "Core Jini". For a reference get "Jini in a Nutshell". For the best and most interesting examples, get this book.
