Product Description

Product Description

Appropriate for introductory Computer Science courses using Java (CS1 with Java) and other introductory programming courses using Java offered in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, and Business departments.

Best-selling author, Walter Savitch, uses a conversational style to teach programmers problem solving and programming techniques with Java. Readers are introduced to object-oriented programming and important computer science concepts such as testing and debugging techniques, program style, inheritance, and exception handling. It includes through coverage of the Swing libraries and event driven programming. The Java coverage is a concise, accessible introduction that covers key language features. Thorough early coverage of objects is included, with an emphasis on applications over applets. The author includes a highly flexible format that allows instructors and readers to adapt coverage of topics to their preferred order. Although the text does cover such more advanced topics as inheritance, exception handling, and the Swing libraries, it starts from the beginning, and it does first teach traditional, more basic techniques, such as algorithm design.

2.0 out of 5 stars No solutions, 2 Mar 2002
By A Customer
You can't learn Java without practising. This book sets you exercises but doesn't give you any solutions to work with, so when you get stuck, you have to just give up unless you know another Java expert. It's a nice read, a good way to understand the core concepts, but you won't be able to write any code because you probably got stuck with the exercises in the first couple of chapters and then gave up on the more advanced ones after not mastering the basics.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK, good for beginners everyone else - don't bother, 13 Nov 2000
By A Customer
In my opinion this book is not useful unless the buyer is just starting to learn to write programs and Java is the first language they are learning. In which case the book takes them through each stage and type of statement in painstakingly great detail. For those that have programmed in at least on language before eg. C. C++ then this book is not for you, the writer takes a whole chapter to explain Arrays, which should really only take a few pages.

One good thing about this book is that a beginner will find the 'Test Yourself' section at the end of each chapter very useful. The questions are not simple and do require you to think about the structure and object orientated nature of Java. Also the free CD provides some source code that could be useful to Run then Edit and see what difference it makes.

All in all the book is not bad, it does cover things such as Applets and images but if your looking for tuition on the database or more complicated sides of java then pass this book over and spend your money on another book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Introduction to Computer Science and java, 18 April 2001
By A Customer
I found this book very informative, and useful. It starts slowly and gradually builds you into the Science of OO and Java.

The only drawback i found was the use of pre-written methods within the learning text. These were easily to hand on the CD but trying to use the book for reference occasionally made me ask "how do you get the results when coding from scratch?"
