4.0 out of 5 stars A very good book with perhaps a misleading title, 30 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Some of the other reviews have picked this book up on it's title as unfortunately its true, this book does not teach you how to program e-business applications (I would like to see one book that does do this though).

This doesn't mean to say that this book isn't any good though. To the relatively technologically- savvy reader (or even those who aren't) this provides a good insight into some of the technologies that are involved in putting together a commercial web presence. From a tutorial perspective, it gives the reader some help in learning and trying out some HTML and some basic scripting (JavaScript in this case). It also gives details about ASP and some client side VB scripting, not to mention some DHTML, Flash, CSS and a mention of what can be achieved with Perl and CGI and some sample code. The only section that is not up to much is the XML one (the one I hoped would be, dissappointingly).

A book that covers an overview of all of these technologies with some worked examples isn't going to go into huge amounts of depth, but can certainly give the reader an idea of what can be achieved by each in the increasingly complex world of web technologies.

The book also covers the concepts of what is involved in e-business (what it actually means behind the hype with lots of examples) and whole sections are also included into e-marketing, e-advertising, e-business ethical issues, encryption and online monetary transactions. All of these sections explain what's involved and the key isssues surrounding them.

So if you want a book that tells you how to install and configure a biztalk server or the finers points of JSP vs PHP vs ASP then you've come to the wrong place. The fact that you know what they are proves that....

But if you want an introductory overview to e-business and some examples to get tour own web-presence going (or maybe you don't want to sound stupid in meeting with the IT staff?) then you've come to the right place (just think about the title next time Deitel and Deitel).

1.0 out of 5 stars A very dissapointing book, 11 Oct 2000
By A Customer
I have enjoyed some of the Deitel's early programming books, however, not this one. It takes a very simplistic view of the development of ecommerce applications; the authors seem to think that all that you need to do is hack up some Javascript and HTML and there you are: no mention of integration, design, legacy code, performance analysis, distributed objects, transaction monitors, reuse and network programming. Some small parts of the book are good, for example the security sections; however, the impression one gains is that all you need do to develop an effective site is use Micrsoft technology. Stay clear.
