Product Description

The one book you need to master Windows 2000 COM+ and DNA development: combines expert high-level theory with practical hands-on programming techniques that go far beyond what you'll find in most COM/DCOM books! Robert J. Oberg starts by introducing COM+ and Microsoft's Distributed interNet Applications architecture: the forest and the trees. Learn how to build a testbed you can use for all your COM+/DNA application development. Refresh yourself on the key COM and DCOM concepts that still underlie COM+ development, including multithreading, automation, error processing and debugging. Next, master the key COM+ techniques associated with advanced multi-tier development -- hands-on, through building your own application. You'll find detailed coverage of COM+ security in Windows 2000 environments; a "survival guide" of key database programming techniques; practical information for using the In-Memory Database and Microsoft Message Queue; and much more. The book goes far beyond most COM/DCOM/COM+ books, with sophisticated coverage of ATL, multithreading, clustering, monikers, the Windows Registry, and much more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction and practical guide to COM and COM+, 7 May 2003
By A Customer
If you are new(-ish) to COM and COM+ then this is definitely the book for you. It is a good, practical introduction to COM and COM+. The focus of the book is on technologies and not architectures. About 1/3 of this book is devoted to COM, 1/4 to Window 2000 administration and COM+ support topics and the rest to COM+. There are useful step by step guides to various task in the administration of COM+, explanations of COM+ and related technologies (MSMQ, MS DTC, security, interception, concurrency, examples of ASP and ISAPI, etc) with plenty of code examples to illustrate the topic of discussion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction and practical guide to COM and COM+, 2 May 2003
A bit lightweight on the COM+ side since 1/2 of this book is devoted to an introduction to COM (COM in VB, COM in VC++, DCOM issues, threading models, COM clients and servers, etc.) so if you are looking for in-depth and purely COM+ then this book may not suit your needs. If, however, you want a practical introduction to both COM and COM+ then this book is excellent! Gives (apart from COM), step by step guides to windows 2000 administration to support COM+, MSMQ, a web technolgies introduction (ISAPI and ASP), distributed transaction support, JIT, plenty of code examples to bring out discussion in the book, and more. The focus is on technologies and not architectures. If you are new-ish to COM and want to get a solid handle on COM+ then this book is ideal.
