Product Description

This book is an introduction to the High Level Architecture for modeling and simulation. The HLA is a software architecture for creating computer models and simulation out of component models or simulations. HLA was adopted by the US Defense Dept. The book is an introduction to HLA for application developers.

From the Back Cover

2251A-0

  • Master HLA: The worldwide standard for simulation and modeling components
  • Detailed coverage for decision-makers and technical professionals.
  • Extended tutorial example: apply HLA to a real-world problem

The comprehensive guide to HLA, the worldwide standard for simulation components!

If you want to succeed in the new worldwide market for plug-in simulation components, Creating Computer Simulation Systems will show you how. This is the only comprehensive guide to the High Level Architecture (HLA), the new global standard for creating component-based computer models and simulations. HLA was recently adopted by the field's #1 customer, the United States Department of Defense-but it will be equally exciting for commercial applications, even including gaming.

In this book, recognized leaders of the HLA community present detailed coverage for decision-makers, software engineers, architects, and project managers alike. Coverage includes:

  • A high-level overview of HLA's technical and business rationale
  • HLA architecture and components, including the Runtime Infrastructure (RTI) and Federation Object Model (FOM)
  • An extended tutorial that shows HLA at work solving a significant real-world simulation problem
  • Advanced technical topics related to HLA implementation
  • Extensive programming examples throughout the book and on website

The accompanying website contains a complete implementation of the HLA Runtime Infrastructure for Windows compatible and other computers, as well as "Test Federate" software you can use to invoke HLA services without coding.

Whether you're a manager, developer, or integrator, HLA will drive the next revolution in simulation-and this book can help you play a leading role.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to this subject, 29 Sep 2000
By A Customer
The book presents a good history of HLA, and clearly argues why it should be considered for use. It then moves into the technical details, which a user experienced in simulation and modelling domains will get to grips with after two or three passes. The examples are useful if you can monitor the flow of execution in a debugger. The books English is not overally technical, and the worked example is easy to follow. Overall, the book has given the members of our project team sufficient knowledge to be able to comprehend and use the more advanced HLA material available from the DoD/DMSO. My only criticism is that the book could dedicate more pages on developing your own HLA models.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last! A good introduction to HLA, 5 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Whilst being familiar with the HLA for the last 18 months, I've found it difficult to "get into" it using the online technical materials available. Although this book doesn't get all that deep into the subject, all areas appear to be covered. The tutorial federation provided is in Java, but the samples don't use many java-specific constructs. The tutorial is provided on CD, but my workstation couldn't really get it going (400MHz PII with 128Mb). I think there's a way around this though (run the federates in a single process). The book also gives a good background to the reasons behind the HLA, and approaches to simulation in general.

4.0 out of 5 stars CD-ROM no longer supplied, 3 Nov 2006
By W. J. Arnold (South Wales (UK)) - See all my reviews

Just a minor quibble. The book no longer comes with a CD-ROM - all original CD references are now updated to the resources on the internet. Not a major problem in these days of broadband, but something to bear in mind. Otherwise book very useful indeed.
