Product Description

Product Description

Throughout both IT and business, project management is undergoing a profound paradigm shift -- from rigid and mechanistic approaches derived from the engineering and construction industries, to dynamic and flexible approaches that anticipate rapid change in technology, organizations and development approaches. In eXtreme Project Management, world-renowned project management expert Rob Thomsett presents the first one-stop guide to these powerful, radical new project management techniques. Thomsett's innovative Extreme Project Management techniques look outward to stakeholders, management and clients, and involve them heavily in the project management process. Thomsett introduces creative new processes such as RAP (RApid Planning) sessions; shows how to facilitate "open" rather than "closed" planning; and demonstrates how to integrate risk management and quality without diminishing the flexibility today's projects demand. Above all, eXtreme Project Management teaches you how to align trust, creativity, openness, and fun with a relentless focus on realizing project benefits and maximizing business value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book with great practical tips, 26 Mar 2008

I love this book. I've taught seminars on how to use the methods, used it in presentations and recommend it all the time. I also use a lot of the techniques myself with clients, who really love the control and visibility they get.

I'd recommend it to anyone involved in project management, even if you aren't actually a project manager.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some useful tips, 11 Mar 2006
Although titled 'Radical', inside the book the author refers to his method as 'eXtreme'. In fact it is hardly radical and certainly not eXtreme either in the normal sense, or by reference to eXtreme Programming. It seems to be a traditional specification-based approach with planning, tracking etc, although placing more emphasis on interpersonal dynamics. He also discusses the idea of a system project extending into production, maintenance and decommissioning. A fair point but normally firmly out-of-scope.

Rob Thomsett seems to have had a wealth of experience in terms of giving training courses but the content of the book is a bit unsophisticated (as is the typography and layout). If you are looking for a book that brings together ideas based on the agile alliance idea, then this isn't it. If you are new to project management, there are a number of things in this book worth considering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neither Radical nor Extreme just very Pragmatic, 9 Mar 2006
There is considerably more to project management for success than blindly following the PRINCE-2 rubric. Rob Thomsett's book covers much of this real art of successful delivery in a surprisingly easy to read text.

The references to famous movies bring home the points in an inspirational way. There are also plenty of anecdotes, many of which fall into the category of 'I've seen other firms make that mistake'.

It is not actually 'radical' more pragmatic. Also, some Amazon links have it as 'Extreme Project Management' (it's not that either).

As a Projects specialist I can recommend this book with the usual caveat applied - still ask whether it is fit for purpose - even if it is better than the big pink OGC book!
