Product Description

Product Description

For Image and Computer Vision, Image Processing, and Computer Vision courses.

This is the first text that provides a balanced treatment of image processing fundamentals and an introduction to software principles used in the practical application of image processing. A seamless integration of material from the leading text, Digital Image Processing by Gonzalez and Woods and the Image Processing Toolbox from Mathworks, Inc. This text works in the MATLAB computing environment; the Toolbox provides a stable, well-supported set of software tools capable of addressing a broad spectrum of applications in digital image processing. The major areas covered include intensity transformations, linear and nonlinear spatial filtering, filtering in the frequency domain, image restoration and registration, color image processing, wavelets, image data compression, morphological image processing, image segmentation, regions and boundary representation and description, and object recognition.

From the Back Cover

Digital Image Processing Using MATLAB is the first book that provides a balanced treatment of image processing fundamentals and the software principles used in their practical implementation. The book integrates material from the leading text, Digital Image Processing by Gonzalez and Woods, and the Image Processing Toolbox of the MathWorks. Inc., a recognized leader in scientific computing. The Image Processing Toolbox provides a stable, well-supported set of software tools for addressing a broad range of applications in digital image processing. A unique feature of this hook is its emphasis on showing how to enhance those tools by the development of new code. This is important in image processing, where there is a need for extensive experimental work in order to arrive at acceptable problem solutions.

After an introduction to the fundamentals of MATLAB programming, the book addresses the mainstream areas of image processing. Areas covered include intensity transformations, linear and nonlinear spatial filtering, filtering in the frequency domain, image restoration and registration, color image processing, wavelets, image data compression, morphological image processing, image segmentation, regions and boundary representation and description, and object recognition.

Some Highlights
  • The book is self-contained.
  • Over 60 new image processing functions are developed—a 35% increase over the comprehensive set of functions in the Image Processing Toolbox.
  • A fully documented listing of every new function developed is included in the book.
  • Using C code with MATLAB is covered in detail.
  • There are 114 examples, over 400 images, and over 150 graphs and line drawings that enhance the discussion of the material.
  • All MATLAB, Image Processing Toolbox, and new functions used in the book, are conveniently summarized in an appendix.
  • The design of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) is covered in detail.
  • A book web site provides complimentary support.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does pretty much what it says on the cover, 13 Dec 2006

I bought this large well bound book along with 'Getting started with MatLab 7' by Rudra Pratap. With the help of both I was image processing with MatLab within a few hours (although a biologist, I have many years Fortran 77 and Visual basic experience). If you aren't a physicist, engineer or mathematician you might need a simple book on calculus and trigonometry as well to remind you of the maths. The maths isn't complicated though in this book (and can even be ignored in many cases). So if you want to get into image processing using your copy of MatLab this book is the obvious choice. Note though that MatLab isn't particularly good if you are interested in image analysis (quantifying the objects within the image in say terms of perimeter, size, grey levels or for colocalisation and object tracking), as it offers little 'off the shelf'. For this try software other than MatLab, like MetaMorph, Image Pro Plus or perhaps freebie ImageJ, which are specialised image analysis packages aimed at biomedical researchers. Also this book, not surprisingly given the title, doesn't cover things like MatLab graphical output and statistics in any detail. Plus there's no support CD/DVD included, although there is details of a support website. But for Image Processing (for example extracting detail from the image and things like object recognition) using MatLab the book is first class and recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does as the cover suggests, 21 Mar 2009

I used this book as part of my study at uni and first thought that it was quite a costly buy. However by the end of the course I was extreamly happy to of spent the money I did.

It does not cover all aspects of MatLab but does cover the parts its supposed to. And it does this very well. This would also act very well as a reference guide for any parts you may be weak on or have trouble with.

Im not going to give it 5* for the following reasons.

1. No CD help, some examples or program help on disk would of been helpful.

2. You will need to use another source as well as this book, although it covers alot it could do with some parts gone over a bit more carefully.

However if you own MatLab and have access to the MatLab help topics in the program then this book will be a nice addition.

This book is a great introduction and learning tool for image processing in Matlab. It describes everything from theory to actual matlab code to help you practice and apply what you are learning. It has a great layout, and is quite informative. Highly recommended for anyone looking to learn about the image processing toolbox in Matlab whether they have prior experience or not.
