Product Description

Product Description

This volume tells the story of Scotland's national Botanic Garden, from its founding in 1670 as a small Physic Garden in the shadow of Holyrood Palace to its status today as one of the world's greatest botanical institutions. In addition to providing a glimpse of the vital scientific research undertaken there, Deni Bown guides the reader season by season around each of the four gardens that comprise the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Over 300 colour illustrations depict the exotic gardens in the city itself; on the hillside at the Younger Botanic Garden Benmore in Argyll; the sub-tropical oasis at Logan Botanic Garden in Galloway; and the borders glen at Dawyck Botanic garden in Tweedale.

5.0 out of 5 stars botanic gardens,edinburgh, 12 Oct 2009
By G. I. Forbes (edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This excellent book is the story of the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh with its 3 sattelite gardens -a)the Younger Gardens at Benmore b)the Logan Gardens at Rhinns and c)the Dawych Gardens at Peebles.
The Botanics as they are known started in 1670 as the Physic Garden near Holyrood, moving to Trinity Hospital then Leith walk and to its final site as the Royal Botanic Gardens at Inverleith in 1820
A good account is given of the Regius Keepers and the work of the gardens including extensive international commitments.
The text, pictures and maps are all first class and all indicate the internat ional importance of the 4 gardens.
The Edinburgh gardens stand head and shoulders above Kew and places like the Eden Project.
A marvellous presentation by the author and HMSO.Abook to be highly recommended.
