PRINCE2 is a very adaptable project management method but new users particularly find knowing how and where to adapt it to the size and scope of their projects somewhat daunting. This can lead to over-zealous adherence to unnecessary levels of formality and detail in smaller, low-risk projects, and the impression of excessive bureaucracy on the part of PRINCE2. This book is the best I have read on PRINCE2, the idea that the method can be tailored will be news to a lot of organisations with thick project management manuals. I found it resonated with my experience in many ways, example, watching a new Project Executive's eyes glaze over as you try an go through the project initiation process with them. The advice of this book for that situation - back off - is common sense.

I found this book very, erm, empowering, and it reduced that nagging fear that I used to carry around about always missing bits of the method out, this book shows that that's OK as long as you've though it through at the start.

A useful read for project and programme managers who want to apply PRINCE2 in an effective and pragmatic way rather than just paying lip service to it.

Don't get me wrong I think PRINCE2 is great it has brought consistency and clarity to the delivery of projects in many organisations. It has given the project manager the ability to ensure requirements are well understood and documented and with 'management by exception' the licence to deliver the project without constant second guessing from above. For this it is rightly hailed as a success.

But what comes next? As organisations become familiar with PRINCE2 they want to internalise it, create their own flavour more suited to the nuances of their business and environment and quite rightly so. Tailoring PRINCE2 the excellent OGC manual on this subject is a great and highly accessible aid in this process and a must for those serious about using PRINCE2 to improve the delivery of projects in their organisation.

However, if every project in an organisation is tailored by each individual project manager soon consistency, one of the key advantages of PRINCE2, becomes lost as each individual applies their own preferences and the method scatters. Now almost all the organisations I know are investigating 'scaling' PRINCE2, that is to say providing two or three clear starting points for different types or classes of projects to narrow the scope for dispersion and reintroduce some consistency. Of course these starting points should still be tailored but this becomes a less significant exercise.

You can of course use Tailoring PRINCE2 to help you with scaling and if you reread it with this in mind it would be well worth the time.

A very good book but for me doesn't go quite far enough and I hope OGC have a "Scaling PRINCE2" title planned......

After reading the blurb and the five star review I decided to purchase this book. However, the opening chapter then kindly explains that in order for the book to be any use you should be PRINCE 2 trained or at least very familiar with it. If that information had been given to me in the first place I wouldn't have bothered to buy it. Very disappointing, because it appears to be quite well structured with plenty of case studies.
