5.0 out of 5 stars Every day is just another day in paradise., 13 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Another day in paradise focuses on the life and experiences of a fourteen-year-old boy by the name of Bobbie in middle America in the 70's. Who as well as a theif is also a heavy drug user whose luck inevitably runs out. Encountering a person by the name of Mel friend and mentor he attempts to turn Bobbie from a petty thieve into a professional.

This book was superbly written with in-depth characterisation for such a relatively small novel. The reason's for liking this book so much is probably the realistic element and fondness of all the characters as well as the ability to relate to all of the different personas, either within myself or through people I have encountered in my life.

I would compare and rank this along side one of my other all time favourite novels Bringing out the Dead by Joe Conelly. In which you follow a medic named frank over 48hr period in New York City and all of the obstacles he encounters. Both of these novels are similar in the fact that as well as liking the character (which is a very rare occurrence) the authors manages to draw the same emotions out you, as the character is experiencing. Both of these novels have been made into feature films featuring big time actors such as Nicholas Cage and James Woods. Proving that these stories must have something going for them. Although Bringing out the dead was interpreted reasonably well in to a movie I feel this book was not.

I would highly recommend both of these books to anyone who enjoyed the motion pictures. Especially this one because all of the highlights from the movie are greatly magnified as well as this the book has a far more thrilling and happy ending. I would also recommend this to anyone who has not seen the movie as this would probably improve the thrill of the novel.

This book shows the gritty realism present in our society today as well as in its past. Through all of the upheaval and struggle, this novel shows us that every day is just another day in paradise.
