Product Description

Product Description

This third novel in the trilogy that began with "The Football Factory" looks at notions of what it means to be English abroad. King explores stereotypes of language and nationalism, as he writes about sex and violence abroad, under the Union Jack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hail to the J. King ,baby!, 22 Feb 2006
By Thiago Bachiega "Thiago Bachiega" (Campinas, Brazil) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I´ve first into John King when I watched Football Factory on dvd. Then I ordered the book and it was surprisingly intense, even better then the movie. Got hooked and ordered England Away.
Thought I´d be tired of his style, but it didn´t happen at all. England Away is as good as Footy Factory, but a lot different. The book is more focused on geography and differences between England and the continent, and it seems more mature than FF.

You can divide the book in three:
First this Tommy Johnson, main character of Football Factory, fancying a good fight and an ass kicking in Deutschland for the pride of his mother England.

Second, Bill Farrell, this veteran of war, going away with his old comrades and remembering the ghosts of the past, his wife and the guys whe killed in Germany. Personally, I´m very interested in WWII, so I thought those moments in the book were very rich and accurate.

And the third part is at the look of Harry, this fat hool who´s more worried about women, but stills want some punch-up. Harry is the responsible for the best humour King can offer. The parts on the ferry and in Berlin watching the fight made me laugh very loudly, almost waking people in my house.

It doesn´t have all that fighting of Football Factory, but seems a better constructed book. While you had some dull chapters in FF like the journalists and go on, focusing the book only on Harry, Tommy and Bill hold your attention all the time.

Go buy it now if you like King style, football, drugs, WWII or only likes to read a pleasant book with strong characters and the best british humour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Realistic portrayal of a segment of football supporters, 15 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: England Away (Paperback)
Third in King's loose triology on a group of Chelsea supporters and their lives both inside and outside of football. This book is closer to The Football Factory in content although the action takes place in Europe as opposed to the grounds of the premier league. The book is fast paced and the dialogue and action scenes are, as ever in Kings works, highly realistic. I felt as if I was on the streets of Amsterdam with these guys! It's an interesting work in that it chronicles two seperate lives throughout the book, switching between between the two at random and offering the reader a number of ironic comparisons. Try Headhunters, the second in the current series, if you don't relate to football, it is a little less dark and at times outright funny. There is no doubt that King is one of the most exciting of the current crop of younger English writers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ambitious, 27 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Another excellent book from King, this one is touch below his previous work if only because it is a little more disjointed and ambitious. There are three narratives at work here: a pensioner recalls his WWII experience and what it all means, a football hooligan travels to Berlin via Holland for a England vs. Germany match, with plenty of violence along the way, and Harry Roberts (seen in Headhunters) travels with Tom and others, but goes off on his own and discovers what the new Europe has on offer. Thus, we get the violence and sex themes from King's previous two books, but mixed in with thoughts on the EU, international bankers and politicians, and so forth. Well worth reading if you like his other stuff.
