Product Description
Synopsis
Formed in the mists of New Year's Eve, The Sex Division sees procreation at its most material, as five men devise a point system based upon the act. A missing brother, prophetic visions, a love-affair, and a confrontation draw the characters out into the open, revealing the men behind the machismo.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Progression, 12 May 2002
Having read and enjoyed "The Football Factory" I was expecting much of the same from "Headhunters". I was pleasantly surprised then, to find that King had moved on to cover the working class 'lad' culture in general rather than just football skins. The five key characters cover many aspects of twentysomething life in modern Britain and it's up to the reader to decide who, if any, they most resemble. In parts sad and in others hilarious (I found Carter's sex/football analogy particularly amusing), "Headhunters" is an important progression for King. Although it may not command the cult following of its predecessor, I feel this is a deeper and better book and well worth the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who Are Ya! Who Are Ya! Who Are Ya!, 3 May 2005
By Der Duke (Berlin, The Fatherland) - See all my reviews
I picked up the 3 books in 1 collection (Football Factory, Headhunters, England Away) by John King a few years back and have got to say it is 1st class.

I know a few ex-hoolies and they say it is the perfect insight into what happens before and after a game, whether it be home or away. I dont know if its changed days or we, the public dont see it going on, I have been to Stamford Bridge on many ocassions, including the time period ranging from The Football Factory to present and have never saw any violence firsthand that is mentioned, although I have been assured many times that it does exist, just not as publicised as it was back in the 80's.

It is a cracking read and I recommend the other John King books, even if you dont have an interest in the subject, or even support Chelsea or England, it is a rivetting read from start to finish. The tales might depict 'bad men', but you feel you can relate to them, they have morals and scruples and a gentlemens code, just on a different level but still the same.

Go on have read, you will be hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Football stereotypes at their finest – top quality, 25 Jul 2003

I read this book immediately after reading The Football Factory and was a bit concerned I was going to read the same thing again. Well, the simplest thing to say is that this is the best book I’ve read by John King.

It follows the lives of a bunch of mates who follow Chelsea, get involved in punch-ups and drink rather a lot, whilst competing in the Sex Division, a season long league where different sexual acts are given a different number of points. In some ways it’s not that dissimilar to The Football Factory except there’s a lot more insight into the individuals rather than the football. Rather that being something which every football fan can relate to I would argue this book is something that every bloke in their early 20s (or can remember their early 20s) will relate to in some way.

Highly recommended!

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment
I thought the chapters in Football Factory that did not concern Football or Football violence were pretty dull, poorly written and full of heavy stereotypes. Read more
