1.0 out of 5 stars Did David Gemmell really say that?, 26 Oct 2001
I was browsing for books to take on holiday and bought all three volumes of this series on the basis of David Gemmells recommendation. Surely, the author of my favourite book ever, LEGEND, can't be wrong. But he was, terribly so. I only read the first volume, not having the energy to plod through the next two volumes. The story is terribly predictable, the world not very exciting, the vampires very unconvincing as the bad guys. But worst of all, I found the 'heroes' terribly annoying. You got one guy with a magic sword which he keeps dropping all the time. You would have thought that after searching for it for 7 years he'd be more careful. You got a scarred faced priest who when faced with death and terrible evil can only think about his lust for the girl, and the girl, well don't even get me stated on her! All in all a terrible disappointment. Lets just hope David Gemmell only recommended this book because his publishers promised him loads of money, because I dread to think what his future books are going to be like if he likes reading this kind of dross. I suspect you will not be surprised to learn I have left this, and the 2 follow up books on the shelves of the library at the hotel I was staying in on holiday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, 25 Mar 2002
First and the best book in a great trilogy. very vivid in te description of charaters and landscapes thus raising it up above the more trashy fantasy novels that are churned out recentally. Though it would be fair to say this book is not as good tolkiens work apart the simarillion but is however a work unto itself. The sheer depth of this world created shows that alot of thought went into the writing. however the book does credit david gemmel for 'helping' it is clear that he has had a major impact upon the book. It follows three charaters thrown together by fate to stop an unamaginal evil (vapyrs) for killing everyone including themselves. Sound like david gemmmel, yes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother., 29 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Don't bother with this book. I struggled through to the end of this series, and wish I hadn't. It's not often that I'm tempted to quit a book which I've started, but I nearly did with this one.

The main problem is that the story is very linear. It's fairly obvious from the start exactly how the 'plot' will develop, and there's little room for surprise. Once you have got through the first few chapters, you know how it's all going to end, and the rest of the book and the series is just a sequence of predictable steps towards the inevitable.

It's a shame really, because the concept has a lot of promise. The books unfortunately fail to flesh out the world though. Ideas crop up which engage your interest, but are never developed. The history of the setting is intriguing, but only explored on a very shallow basis. Character development exists, but is very predictable.

Honestly, hold on to your cash. This writer may get better with time, but he really needs to pay less attention to the epic sweep, and spend more time on plot and detail.
