Published in 1981, this novel marked the beginning of the literary career of James Ellroy. A certain number of themes one will find in later novels are already present in BROWN'S REQUIEM : the "Black Dahlia" mystery, corruption in the L.A.P.D., a fascinating serial killer or the main character searching for redemption.

I liked a lot the unusual descriptions of the world of the golf's caddies or the immoderate love of Fritz Brown for classical music. For a first novel, it's clearly a winner and I recommend it to those of you who want to discover the venomous world of James Ellroy.

A book for Tiger.

Written soon after Ellroy quit drinking, quit speeding and quit various other unmentionable habits, this is his first novel and it displays the same obsessions with the underside of LA life that colour all his other work. At times the plot is reminiscent of Raymond Chandler - particularly "The Little Sister" and "The Long Goodbye" - but the tone is considerably darker throughout, though the prose is not quite as bloodstained as his later LA Quartet. On the plus side, the plot is rather clearer than some of his later books and this may be rather more rewarding to casual readers than (say) White Jazz or The Cold Six Thousand...

An excellent thriller that sets the agenda for Ellroy's next 20 years of writing.

As a first novel, this semi-autobiographical story about a part-time undercover private eye is interesting and eventful. Taking the reader on a journey from the US to Mexico and back again, Ellroy never stops packing the punches. An ex-alcoholic, ex-cop, car repo man/private eye is hired by a golf caddy to investigate his innocent sister and the much older guy she lives with as friends. This leads to much murder and mayhem, dragging in cops, caddies and other odd characters along the way. It is almost unput-downable, but not quite. Having read this novel, however, I now intend to read more of his work, so that has to have made some good impression. P.S. the LA slang can be a bit confusing at times to a Brit like me!
