Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

If you saw the 1995 film adaptation of this Crichton thriller, somebody owes you an apology. While you're waiting for that to happen, try reading the vastly more intelligent novel on which the movie was based. The broad lines of the plot remain the same: A research team deep in the jungle disappears after a mysterious and grisly gorilla attack. A subsequent team, including a sign-language-speaking simian named Amy, follows the original team's tracks only to be subjected to more mysterious and grisly gorilla attacks. If you can look past the breathless treatment of 80s' technology, like voice-recognition software and 256K RAM modules (the book was written in 1980), you'll find the same smart use of science and edge-of-your-seat suspense shared by Crichton's other work. --Paul Hughes, Amazon.com

Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent., 8 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I saw the film version of this book and it was rubbish. When I read the book it was a million times better! Michael Crichton is a brilliant author who it seems cannot stop writing bestsellers! Some of my friends did not like the detail that went into the book, but I think it makes the book better - you can actually understand the issues intead of authors glossing over whole topics. The only possibly bad thing about this book was that the ending could have been a little better. Some of the areas approached are thought provoking, which shows how much research went into the book. The topic of primate research is now much harder than it was then - the issue of ethics is around every corner. All in all, an exellent book that everyone should read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Diabolical !!!!, 2 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Lets get it straight, I am a gorilla lover and have conducted research in the congo on this amazing animal, in it's equally amazing home so you may think my review of this popcorn novel is skewed somewhat. However i am also a lover of Dinosaurs, fantasy sci-fi etc (I am a massive muppets fan even!) but quite frankly this book is DREADFUL. I saw the film many years ago and wasn't very impressed, but people kept telling me the book was great. How wrong I was to listen to them. The book reads like it was written by a high school pupil. Two dimensional characters, awful plot, and ridiculous techno hardware, make for cringable reading. And as for the gorillas!! Chrichton even claims that Dian fossey witnessed wild gorillas eating meat!-who does this guy's research!
If you thought Chrichton's Lost World was bad this beats it hands down -its the last word in drivel.
If you want an ape based sci-fi thriller try the Sixth Chromosome by Robin Cook, much darker, intelligent and good fun to boot. .Chrichton simply does not deserve your money for this I'm afraid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Crichton's Best., 2 April 2002
By A Customer
I bought the book after watching the film first. I was hoping that the fact that the books are better than the film would be true in this case. Unfortunatley I was bitterly dissapointed, the book was not much better. I felt the action was slow and not to the standards that I expected from Crichton.

In short I would not personally suggest the book to readers especially young ones. This is because the I felt that the book was full of politics and this made my mind wander after a while.

Another fine novel by Michael Crichton. Kind of lost me in a few places but has enough action and smart ideas for me to submit a good review.
