5.0 out of 5 stars How many control freaks do you know?, 15 Jun 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This book will make you laugh out loud and it will make you cry. Helena has built a good life for herself and her son Freddie since her divorce from control freak Leonard. But then things start to fall apart. She loses her job as a radio presenter, her father is ill and Leonard announces he's moving to Castleford a small town on the coast to be near Freddie. This means Helena could bump into him and his girl friend - another Helena - at any time.

Helena's good friends - Victoria and Esther - live locally and encourage her to just get on with her life and ignore Leonard. Helena is almost immediately offered a new job as a television documentary producer which solves her financial worries though the company are making a documentary about Castleford so there is the potential for more problems.

I loved the dialogue and the plot in this book. Some of the incidents are hilarious and others are poignant. How Helena learns that the only person she can control is herself makes interesting reading. The story makes serious points about not valuing appearance above substance and about old fashioned family values though the 'message' is never over-done.

The characters are realistic and Helena is someone who most readers will identify with. I liked her freinds as well though Leonard's friends are monsters of hypocricy. All the characters are three dimnensional and believable and even the worst ones have some redeeming features. This is an excellent summer read and every bit as good as the author's 'The Playground Mafia'. I loved it.

I read this as light weight chick lit type thing for my holiday brain dead reading session! but it was too light weight, it was boring, patronising, predictable garbage - don't waste your time. sorry but avoid at all cost - left it in hotel room bin!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Summer Read, 19 Jun 2009
I really enjoyed this book. A fun, easy read that kept me entertained from start to finish, and its kinda cool that it features my favourite radio station Passion for the Planet.

A fun chick-lit read - just what you need when you want to relax.
