Product Description

A civilised game of Duplicate Bridge ends in a double murder in which both victims were strangled with a tourniquet of picture wire. The crimes seem identical, but were they carried out by the same hand? The odds of solving this crime are stacked up against Inspector Hemingway. Fortunately, this first-rate detective doesn't miss a trick.

4.0 out of 5 stars DUPLICATE--but Original, 23 Sep 2003
This review is from: Duplicate Death (Paperback)
A better detective story than others by this author we have read. Inspector Hemingway does a good job of discovering the persons who strangled a blackmailer / drug-dealer and his mistress. The identity of the first murderer comes as a distinct surprise, although the alert reader will latch onto the second murderer as soon as the Marriages and Legitimacy Act is mentioned. Several good red herrings, a nice use of the drug trade, and plenty of wit and amusing characters (Insp. Grant, Cynthia Haddington, Lord Guisborough) make this a memorable tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars A first-class murder mystery, with people you will warm to.., 14 Feb 2002
By A Customer
If you only know Georgette Heyer for her romantic historical novels, you are in for a treat. She also wrote witty and stylish detective novels, with characters you warm to from the start.

A tennis party in an English village is followed by the discovery of a body. Everybody has an alibi, but somebody must be guilty. Is it the dead man's neice, who keeps house for him? Or perhaps the local solicitor, who resents the fact that the deceased has taken over many of his clients. Could it be the couple at the local farm, who are obviously hiding a guilty secret? Why is one man trying to get himself suspected of the murder?

Add to this the suspicion that the dead man has been trying his hand at blackmail, and you have all the ingredients for a first-class murder mystery.

Enter Georgette Heyer's Scotland Yard detectives, one of whom is determined to clear up the case before he goes on holiday!

In the midst of all this activity, two young people have more romantic matters on their mind.

Read, and enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very, very, dated and a plot that goes nowhere, 18 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Duplicate Death (Paperback)
This book is littered with words like 'bounder' and 'comrade' and unlike all other Heyer books which generally age well this has not. I did not like any of the characters; and the murder plots were silly. In fact without giving away the plot you could never guess the 2nd murderer as his motive would be redundant today. Honestly even if you're a keen fan don't bother.
