Product Description

Eighteen-year-old Jenna is sharing a flat in Brohl, Germany, with her friends Caro and Merle when a girl is killed nearby. The murder seems to have parallels with two other frightening crimes. Then one day, Caro is found murdered - stabbed seven times and with her necklace missing, just like the other girls. At the funeral, Jenna swears revenge in front of everybody, and in turn attracts the attention of Nat, a handsome and mysterious strawberry picker. With Jenna sidetracked by love, Merle sets about solving Caro's murder herself. But as the answer dawns on her, another horrifying reality emerges.

Young, beautiful and innocent.
Most of all, innocent.
A fairy just for him, not for anyone else in the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars More of a thriller than a murder mystery, 28 Dec 2008

Jenna has finally managed to establish an independent life from her famous mother, sharing a flat with her friends Caro and Merle. The three girls are very different but their friendship is genuine. When Caro is murdered by a serial killer, Jenna and Merle decide to track him down and bring him to justice. Jenna's mother, a renowned author who writes crime novels, is horrified by this resolution and tries to stop their investigation, with little success, while the inspector assigned to the case is frustrated by the lack of leads. Meanwhile, Nathaniel, Caro's former boyfriend, has become intrigued by Jenna and is slowly weaving a spell of secrecy and sexual frustration over her.

This isn't a murder mystery, the identity of the killer is established early on. Feth is more interested in the aftermath of a murder, how it affects loved ones and how people cope with the trauma of losing someone in such a brutal way. The novel is filtered through the characters' thoughts (though only Jenna's parts are told in first person). Despite her early death, Caro remains a strong presence in the novel through diary entries and poetry, which makes her friends' devotion sympathetic and easy to understand. We are also put in the serial killer's mind in order to understand his motives, if not sympathise with them. Finally, Imke's point of view adds a further dimension to the novel, as she writes crime stories, and therefore her voice can be seen as a sort of critique on writing in general, and the crime genre in particular.

The translation is very smooth and the novel is easy to read without being shallow or facile. It's a tense, chilling read, definitely recommended for people who love thrillers and psychological tension. My only problem is with the jacket, which is nicely produced, but why publish this in the Definition series and not put the definition on the cover, as before?
