Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Nobody has a better ear for the whine of the unloved and unappreciated than Ruth Rendell. Early in this Inspector Wexford adventure, a young woman who was bound and gagged during a robbery demands victim counselling; not long after, families of some people taken hostage quickly cluster themselves into a support group. The titular "road rage" is equally timely and politically correct: protestors have gathered from around the world to stop, by whatever means they can, a new motorway that will cut through some of the woods surrounding Wexford's fictional but endearing village of Kingsmarkham.

Product Description

From the author of SIMISOLA, a novel featuring Chief Inspector Wexford, whose wife allies herself to a protest movement when a by-pass is planned for Kingsmarkham, but the plot thickens when the lifeless body of a young woman is discovered, and people go missing, including his wife.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Wexford it gets personal., 30 Aug 2009

This is the first time I have read not seen Wexford and I enjoyed it. Environmentalists including Mrs Wexford are opposed to a new road. Extremist activists appear to have kidnapped Wexford's wife and others, some of whom are killed. Rendell is a good writer who keeps one's interest right up to the twist at the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Rage over building a Road, 23 Aug 2001
By A Customer
England just like everywhere else in the first world has to continuously build more motorways and freeways to make sure traffic can get from one place to another. The road builders have come to Kingsmarkham where Chief Inspector Wexford resides and presides. Far be it for a senior police officer to join the ranks of the radical demonstrators and professional agitators but we are left in no doubt that Wexford does not approve of the destruction of countryside around his district. His wife Dora is not so restricted and openly joins the demonstrators. Then during the clearance of the proposed site a body is found so Wexford and Burden become deeply involved. As usual Rendell draws her characters as real people with genuine feelings although they may not all share the same opinions. This is particularly evident in the views of Wexford and Burden.

4.0 out of 5 stars Endeared me absolutely to Chief Inspector Wexford!, 21 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I felt as though I had lived all my life in Kingsmarkham on account of Ms. Rendell's vivid descriptions of this English country village and its beautiful surroundings. I half expected to dream of Map butterflies and people living in trees by the time I had finished this absorbing book. In contrast to this idyllic setting were murder, kidnapping and bribery. I didn't know what to expect, partly due to being caught up in the myriad of emotions evoked by Ms. Rendell's wonderful Wexford, and this made the end of the book all the more satisfying. I'M HOOKED!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but predictable
This a nice book. Well written and interesting. I think that what happens in Wexford's life was far more interesting than the mystery itself. Read more
