This review is from: The Butcher (Paperback)
wonderfully translated into english from the original french, this short novel is about a young woman who is both attracted to and repelled by the overweight highly sexed butcher she works for. The graphic descriptions of the cuttng of the meat are matched by Ree's incredible literary skills in describing the young womans first sexual encounter with this man. It is an odd combination of ideas but works wonderfully, the imagery and use of language is phenomenal. Once read never forgotten.( this is not a sadistic work in spite of its setting)

This was a disappointment. I was expecting an outstanding erotic work. Instead I found it pretentious, wordy and altogether too poetic. Beyond that it crossed into what I imagine was a chemically induced fantasy world. It may impress the academic but would leave most people cold. I felt her mental anguish but none of her pleasure which was undefined and illusory. I would never buy anything else penned by this person whether or not in the same genre. Compared to The Sexual Life of Catherine M which is massively sexual, if not particularly erotic, this little book pales into not merely insignificance, but non-event. Dont bother, you will be bored. Try a tin of cocoa,if you need to sleep. That works and its cheaper!
