Product Description

Product Description
When aspiring novelist Christopher Flinders drops out of university to write his masterpiece (in between shifts as a fish delivery man and builder's mate), his family is sceptical. But when he is taken up by the London editor Owen Goddard and his charming wife Diana it seems success is just around the corner. Christopher's life has so far been rather short of charm - growing up in an unlovely suburb, with unambitious parents and a semi-vagrant brother - and he is captivated by his generous and cultured mentors. However, on the brink of realising his dream, Christopher makes a desperate misjudgement which results in disaster for all involved. Shattered, he withdraws from London and buries himself in rural Yorkshire, embracing a career and a private life marked by mediocrity. Twenty years on a young academic researching into Owen Goddard seeks him out, and Christopher is forced to exhume his past, setting him on a path to a life-changing discovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling return to form for Ms. Chambers, 25 May 2007
By Mr. T. F. Sargent "Toby Sargent" (SE London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Editor's Wife (Hardcover)
To be described as 'modern' by The Daily Mail and 'intelligent' by The Daily Express may not be quite what any novellist aspires to, but Ms Chambers need not worry. This is an excellent book which is hard not to devour in a single sitting. Funny and wise, the book explores the small change of relationships and the way that the driving wheels of lives, big and small, click together across generations. Writing - unusually - from the male perspective, Ms Chambers presents a lead character that, if sometimes a tad more in touch with his feminine side than might be expected, is credible and interesting. The smaller characters (his brother Gerald and his 'cleaner' Patty, for example) are nicely observed and move the story along with wit and pace. The set pieces - two quite extraordinary dinner parties - are also masterpieces of funny and painfully truthful writing, while the trademark final twist is played with a flourish, and makes the whole a much more assured piece than 'In a Good Light', her last work.

Certainly worth five stars, and at just seven quid on Amazon, far better value than a good bottle of supermarket wine or a budget CD.

Not as good as 'Learning to Swim', but pretty close.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another cracker from Clare Chambers, 2 April 2007
By Patricia A. Harrad (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Editor's Wife (Hardcover)
It's best to start reading a Clare Chambers novel only when you have plenty of free time, since her books are so engrossing and so funny and you mind so much about the people in them that you don't want to do anything else until you've read the last page. I raced as greedily as ever through The Editor's Wife, a wonderfully convoluted love story - as usual the characters are wonderfully alive, witty in a particularly realistic way, and similarly knowing, and hopeful, and lost. An absolute treat, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underated author with another cracker - FAB, FAB, FAB., 18 Jul 2007
This review is from: The Editor's Wife (Hardcover)
I have read all of Clare Chamber's books and loved them. I raced through this over a couple of nights. I could have read it in one sitting but forced myself to savour. If you haven't read her work yet then I can really recommend that you do, she tells a wonderful story with characters you really care about and her writing is exquisite, not a word wasted. What I love about her work is it is so accessible and really well written, a very satisfying read. A bargain for £7, the price of an average paperback. This author deserves a wider audinece, BUY, BUY, BUY.
