1.0 out of 5 stars NO NO NO, 20 Aug 2007
By Ray "Take Five" (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Woman in the Fifth (Hardcover)
I am a number one fan of Douglas Kennedy, so I am unhappy about saying this is rubbish. Kennedy still writes with great flair and certainly makes you turn pages. The problem is that having read 200 pages it begins to dawn on you what the basis of the story is and it's just plain silly.
If you loved 'The Pursuit of Happiness' don't read this - his next book might be better

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, 20 July 2007
By L. Brown (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Woman in the Fifth (Hardcover)
I don't normally write reviews but I've just finished this book and felt I had to. I'm a huge DK fan and have loved all his previous books, but this felt like he was trying something new and it just didn't work. One of his strengths is in describing the intricacies of relationships and human downfall and I wish he had stuck to that with this book. The start of Woman in the Fifth - Harry running away from his mistakes and trying to start a new life in Paris - felt like a re-hash of a few of Kennedy's older (and better) books, and the end suspended all reality and was a bit silly. If you're new to DK please don't base your opinion of him on this book - I highly recommend State of the Union and Big Picture.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing!, 13 Jun 2007
By Salinger "Pam" (New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Woman in the Fifth (Hardcover)
After just reading The Pursuit of Happiness by Kennedy I found this a huge disappointment. I've read his previous four books and they were all unputtadownable, page turners. TPOH was a great story, the characters real but this...this was just a complete disappointment. It's almost as if another person had written it. Sorry. But I expected something as good as the others. It didn't help that I found a few editing errors. Was Kennedy trying to write magical realism?? Or maybe I just didn't get it. Was this woman a figment of his imagination or what?? Noooo.... Please stick to what you're good at. I'm really looking forward to his next book. I hope it's believeable and beautiful like the others!
