Kate Saunders has found a timely twist to the plot first devised by Stella Gibbons in Cold Comfort Farm, about a bossy, well-organised young woman who sorts out the lives of her nearest and dearest. In this case Cassie is the former girl-next-door whose wretchedly lonely life was transformed by her childhood friends, Phoebe, Fritz and Ben. Phoebe, the warm-hearted mother of the feckless "bachelor boys" is dying of cancer and knows that, charming and beautiful though they are, they will never be able to fend for themselves as (unemployed) actor and concert pianist. She begs Phoebe to find wives for them, and Phoebe, dutiful and intelligent, does so - only to discover she has fallen for one of her childhood friends herself. The deliciously funny jokes about North London males are universally recognisable, but what also adds real emotional depth is the account of the dying mother, and the palpable closeness and warmth between all members of this eccentric, extended family. By far the best thing Saunders has ever written, it has the maturity and compassion of a grown-up romantic novel.

The second of two books I bought last week - I settled down for another entertaining Kate Saunders read. I wasn't disappointed. The writing, the humour, the subtlety and poignancy of the relationships within the story were fantastic - the book is so good i have read it again twice from cover to cover - all within the space of a week. It veered away from the style of some of her other novels - probably enforced by the first person narrative, and yes, was a bit predictable towards the end, but was still one of the most amazing books I have read in a long while, especially within this genre.
I can't wait for the next one!

I've been somewhat underwhelmed by Kate Saunders' previous books, but she hits the jackpot with this one. The story of Cassie's entanglement with the Darling family is beautifully handled, and the outcome isn't as predictable as it is with most romcoms. Phoebe, Ben and Fritz are enchanting characters, and in Cassie she has created a really sympathetic heroine (even if she's a bit too well-behaved and unstroppy for my liking). Highly recommended.
