Product Description

Product Description
In peaceful southern Sweden, Louise Akerblom, an estate agent, pillar of the Methodist church, wife and mother, disappears. There is no explanation and no motive. Inspector Kurt Wallander and his team are called in to investigate. As Inspector Wallander is introduced to this missing persons case, he has a gut feeling that the victim will never be found alive, but he has no idea how far he will have to go in search of the killer. In South Africa, meanwhile Nelson Mandela has made his long walk to freedom. Wallander find himself caught up in a conspiracy involving renegade members of the South African secret service and a former KGB agent, all of them set upon halting Mandela's rise to power. Faced with a world in which terrorism knows no frontiers Wallander must prevent a hideous crime that means to dam the tide of history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Follow Wallander in an extraordinary investigation, 28 May 2007
By Scully Bloke (Wiltshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Forget the bad and indifferent reviews given to this book, its a page turning excellent 3rd novel in the Kurt Wallander series.

Our hero Wallander is struggling with life. His father and daughter are both problems for him and his continious drinking is starting to have an effect on him when he is called to a case to investigate the disappearance of a local married woman.

Little does Wallander know that his investigation will find himself embroiled in a plot to kill Nelson Mandella.

The strain of this investigation and the events that unfold take Wallander to the point of a nervous breakdown.

Its an absolutely excellent addition to the Wallander serious of books. Mankell pushes the character of Wallender to breaking point. He takes the reader on a journey to see how our so very human hero handles extreme fear and stress.

The atmosphere created is extraordinary, the suspense you can taste as you spiral downwards with Wallander as the events unfold.

Fantastic fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolut Swedish thriller, 22 Nov 2003
Inspetor Wallander is called in to investigate a missing persons case only to become embroiled in an international investigation crossing borders and topical issues.

Wallander is believable as a character for a clutch of reasons. He is no stranger to personal failure whether it be when his washing has to be done or his family affairs. He has questions about his job and his society as all generations have and he is just not sure about the answers, or whether he wants them.

Mankell performs a careful and successful balance of police procedure and strong plot, an enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 2 Jan 2005
By S. Mazumder "s_maz" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Having read virtually all of Henning Mankell's novels now, I am an avid fan of his, and in particular his leading character, Detective Kurt Wallander.

In 'White Lioness' we follow Wallander as he investigates the murder of a harmless housewife. What ensues is a whirlwind conspiracy to assasinate Mandela in South Africa, yet Wallander is investigating in Sweden. The duality of the story is fantastic...we simultaneously follow Wallander and his quest to find the housewife's killer, but we also learn of the bigger picture that is taking place in South Africa.

I don't think this is the best in the Wallander series, but it certainly is up there as another very enjoyable book!
