Review
Originally published in 1962, The Bull from the Sea takes up the story of Theseus where The King Must Die ends. Theseus returns home from Crete, having saved Athens from the curse of the Minotaur, a human in Mary Renault's books and not a hybrid monster, to find that his father, King Aigeus, has died. Theseus, now an outsider in Athens, must take his father's place on the throne. Torn between the demands of kingship and his longing for adventure, while travelling to back to Crete to marry the Princess Phaedra in an effort to unite the two dynasties, Theseus encounters Hippolyta, the Amazon queen, who becomes the love of his life and bears him a son. Then he must face Phaedra's terrible revenge. Mary Renault makes a legendary and alien society real and tangible through her brilliant storytelling and scholarship. Though this is the sequel to The King Must Die, you do not need to have read the first book to understand and enjoy this one. (Kirkus UK)
