5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem of a book, 22 Mar 2006
By G. Fergus "jollyjambo" (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews

A first class, well written, pacy, funny and intelligent thriller with an unexpected ending. A hero who is less than perfect but not necessarily in the usual or expected way. Great characters that you will remember. Difficult to put down.

Robert Ferrigno is a real find and if he isn't already will surely become hugely popular. The book is a weird cross between Carl Hiaasen and Robert Crais. Not only is Ferrigno a great writer but he has an extensive back catalogue that still appears to be in print. Read one book and you will look for more.

If you like good thriller crime fiction, give this a try.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting enough, 3 Mar 2002

This review is from: Heartbreaker (Paperback)
Attracted by a blurb on the front by James Ellroy that stated this book was "dark and hilarious", I found it to be neither, really. That's not to say it didn't keep me interested. The plot involves the main character fleeing Miami to escape his psychotic one time friend and ending up in LA, where he meets a boatload more of psychos to take up his time. He becomes involved with a very rich, unstable family through falling for their whale-loving daughter, but he's not the only one with his eyes on a rich sibling. The book chooses a pretty good ending to all the shenanigans, but also hints at a sequel. To be honest, I wouldn't be all that interested in further escapades, as the characters failed to engage me that much. There are plenty of crime writers concentrating their stories in either South Florida or Los Angeles, and you'd be better off checking out Carl Hiassen, Elmore Leonard or James Ellroy if you haven't already.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling writing, 7 Oct 2005
By Iain Dawson (Twickenham, Middlesex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I love picking up a book that I don't expecting much from and enjoying it. This is one of these books.

I'd never heard of the author but this is a cracker. Sharp, funny writing. Good characters and plot. It does read a little like a film script sometimes, but a damn good one.
