Product Description

Anna Maxted

'American Maeve Binchy, a modern day Jane Austen, whatever praise you heap on Elizabeth Berg, she probably deserves it.’

Product Description

It is 1961, and thirteen year old Katie is facing a summer full of conflict. First, instead of letting her find her own work for the season, Katie's father has arranged for two less than satisfactory baby-sitting jobs. Worse, Katie has been forcibly inducted into the 'loser' Girl Scout troop organised by her only friend Cynthia's controlling and clueless mother. A much anticipated visit to her former home in Texas and ex-best friend Cherylanne proves disappointing. And then comes an act of betrayal that leaves Katie questioning her views on friendship, on her ability not to take those she loves for granted, and most important, on herself.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly true to form, 4 Mar 2004
I found the writing style of this book to be very poor. The story tells of a summer in the life of 13 year old Katie and is told through her eyes, and I think Berg has tried to emulate the way a 13 year old thinks but failed. The prose is immature and clumsy, the speech is stilted, the little characterisation that exists is stereotyped. At times the book was over-sentimental, mostly it was boring and a laborious read. I found none of the "warmth, wisdom and generosity of spirit" promised in the blurb. Whether this is because Berg can be accused of trying to hard or because she simply cannot write, I would not like to say. Interestingly, after completing True to Form, I gave Berg the benefit of the doubt, and read another of her novels, but found much the same thing.

If you enjoy reading tales of childhood, I would avoid Berg and recommend reading Esther Freud instead, who can capture brilliantly and without condescension, the world seen through the eyes of a child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Value Friends, Make New Friends, and Keep Your Feet on the Ground, 25 Mar 2008

Be sure to listen to the reading of this book by Arija Bareikis. She's terrific!

Imagine that you are a thirteen year-old girl whose mother has died, and your authoritarian father (who is in the Army) gets you two jobs for the summer that you don't want. Obviously, you are going to do the jobs . . . but your stomach is churning with dread. What is there to look forward to?

Katie Nash ends up having the summer of her life, learning new meanings to friendship, making new friends, and finding out important lessons about herself and the challenges of being a teenage girl. She brings a caring heart to her life that takes this book from being somewhat of a formula book into one that will bring many smiles.

Although I was never a teenage girl, Ms. Berg's writing took me back to those days and the desire to be an adult . . . while my parents had other ideas.

Part of the book's charm is that Ms. Berg knows how to let her characters grow and change in ways that you usually don't expect.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to re-create 1961 and think about the importance of becoming open to more possibilities.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very dissapointing...., 24 Jun 2004
By Clatter Ho "Charlotte" (Milton Keynes, UK) - See all my reviews
This book was OK but it definitely wasn't inspiring and didn't provide any of the 'warmth, engagement or self-discovery and definition' that the blurb promised.

There wasn't really a story or plot to get you hooked and I found it hard to get close to the main character (Katie). Basically 'True to Form' is a just a book about a teenage girl during the summer of 1961, and the trials and tribulations that go with someone of that age at that time. The book also ended very suddenly. I have read it now, but wouldn't bother reading it a second time around or take it with me to a desert island. This one is off to the charity shop!
