5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting military hard sci-fi, 26 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Frezza writes basic simple military sci-fi with reference to the tensions between soldiers and their political masters. This is no exception. If you enjoy military sci-fi that feels real then seek out this book,

5.0 out of 5 stars Top line military SF, 10 Mar 1999
By A Customer
"Fire" is a worthy sequel to A Small Colonial War. Robert Frezza's universe and characters are equal to David Weber's Honor Harrington series and arguably are even better. Superb military SF.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sequel to A Small Colonial War, 14 Oct 2008
By S. Wong (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a premier example of the new-ish genre of military-hard-sci-fi, as pioneered by Robert Heinlein and more recently, David Drake. This is a sequel to A Small Colonial War, and continues the story of an infantry battalion fighting low-intensity warfare on a colonial planet set in the near-to-mid future. The technology, weapons and tactics have been updated to reflect the future, but human nature, and especially war at the level of the individual soldier's experience remains the same. He has a gift for writing about the soldiers' experiences in a cynical yet humorous way; wry and understated but also exciting and cinematic at times. I love his combat scenes, which are told from the soldiers' level, and bring the reader into the action. He is also able to make his characters very real and human, with personal motivations, strengths and weaknesses. Overall, this is a story of the triumph of the human spirit and comradeship over impersonal political and technological forces.
This is one of my favourite books and the only advice I would give to other readers (other than Read This Book!) is to read A Small Colonial War first. You won't regret it.
