Product Description

Review
Already a hardened thief at ten, when she was rescued from the streets and half-domesticated, none of her NYPD colleagues would care to trust a strange animal like computer-obsessed Kathy Mallory with a gun. Hang on like grim death as she buckles it on to hunt down her foster-father's killer in this devastating debut thriller. (Kirkus UK)

This is a break-the-mold detective story, an incredible debut for O'Connell and a blessing to female detective fans everywhere. Sgt. Kathleen Mallory, a computer hacker for the NYPD, started life as a wild child on New York City's streets. She was adopted by police detective Louis Markowitz and his wife, Helen, but the happy years with them have merely laid a civilized veneer over what is still a semi-savage product of the urban jungle. At the book's opening, Mallory is an orphan again: Helen Markowitz died years before and Detective Markowitz has just been felled by a serial killer. Mallory buries him and then, while on compassionate leave, methodically tracks the killer. One of this book's key pleasures is the high level of intelligence and unpredictability exhibited by all the main characters, whether it's Mallory, the killer, the chief of police, the old ladies who get their kicks from seances and playing the stock market, or Charles Butler, Mallory's unwitting new detective partner, father figure, and potential love interest. Mallory isn't the only one struggling to adjust to civilized society: There's a millionaire with an IQ of 187 who can't figure out how to get food out of cans; a young girl, who has just inherited a fortune, has to panhandle for subway fare. The heart of the book is made up of magical illusions, theatrical performances that pass for reality, emotional and media-related distortions. Nothing in this world of wealthy dowagers on Gramercy Park is what it seems. It is up to Mallory, Butler, and even Detective Markowitz's ghostly presence to sift through the illusions and the stock reports until the real killer is identified and caught. A publishers' feeding frenzy netted O'Connell $800,000 for this book and the sequel - which means, fortunately, that it won't be long before we hear from Mallory again. (Kirkus Reviews)

Product Description
Kathy Mallory was saved from the streets and adopted by Louis Markowitz, a New York detective. Now Markowitz is dead, and his killer may be responsible for a number of other deaths. Kathy, now a police officer herself, begins a search for his killer, and an investigation into her own psyche.

5.0 out of 5 stars very very good detective story, 19 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This is the first novel in the sequence of four containing Kathy Mallory. There are a number of features which make this book special:

i) it contains a detective story with a plot of great complexity and subtlety

ii) it is an intense thriller which grabs you by the throuht on the first page and only begrudgiongly lets go at the end.

iii) characters of great depth, in particular Detective Mallory.

iv) this all takes place against a very vivid backdrop, thereby punching a very strong message, about the nature of the human condition.

In summary this book contains the three fundamental requirements of a crime story: plot, characters and social comment. Therefore you should buy it.

O'Connell writes vividly and with passion. What's more she knows a good plot when she sees one. At first glance this may seem like quite standard detective fiction, but O'Connell turns it on its head. She knows how to shock without being gratuitous and she has a great eye for characters. Mallory is mad, bad and dangerous to know and yet all the time there is a hint of softness underneath, you so want to believe that she is not as cold and damaged a human being as she makes out. She reminds me of the Terminator made flesh!

I have enjoyed all of the Mallory books. They require a bit of thought but the characters are superbly portrayed and the story line is ingenious.
