5.0 out of 5 stars Short & gripping read., 25 Feb 2003

This is a great book, dealing with a hot month in Florida, which tends to make people a little crazy. A woman is murdered and a troubled boy disappears - his mother searches for him and the search leads her to unexpected passion. Billed as a 'thriller', I found it more of a drama. Though there is a twist near the end, it is the boy and his mother who are the key characters in the book. His pain and sadness will stay with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Florida heat crackles off the pages, 9 Jun 2007

I really loved this book. I have read several Alice Hoffman books, but this was my favourite to date. In other novels a mystical/magical element would probably irritate me, but in Alice Hoffman's beautiful books, and this one particularly it is not over done, it is subtle, and intriguing. The Florida heat crackles off the pages, you can almost smell the swamp, and see the turtles as they make their weary way to the sea. Hoffmans portrayl of a troubled young boy is brilliantly done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning "must-have" novel, 18 Sep 2006
By M. Cookson-carter "Cookie Monster" (Lancashire) - See all my reviews

If you have never read Hoffman before, prepare yourself for a real rollercoaster of emotions.
The pivotal characters; the embittered boy and his frustrated mother are truly believable - you want to take the boy and hold him tight for his compassion and love for the small baby, which he rescues after her mother is murdered. As usual the characters, who are given smaller roles underpin the story. They punctuate the novel, sometimes only briefly, yet they stay true to the development of the storyline.
You will enjoy Alice Hoffman's metaphoric style of writing but don't think that this will be an easy read. You can't simply put one of her books down and forget about it. The characters will become a part of your life and even when you finish the book you will still want to know what happens to the boy, his mum, the baby and all of the others who make this novel, as with most of Hoffman's truly captivating.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good for a beach read !
I took this on holiday with me and was quite disappointed. It's quite dark and serious and there is no humour atall which doesn't make it much of a fun read. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars quite a good read
I enjoyed this book which I would say was a top end holiday read (i.e. not your Captain Corelli's Mandolin but not simple like your Jackie Collin's novel). Read more
