Product Description

Product Description
The third volume of the standard edition of the complete psychological works of Sigmund Freud.

About the Author
Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 in Moravia; between the ages of four and eighty-two his home was in Vienna: in 1938 Hitler's invasion of Austria forced him to seek asylum in London, where he died in the following year. His career began with several years of brilliant work on the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. He was almost thirty when, after a period of study under Charcot in Paris, his interests first turned to psychology, and another ten years of clinical work in Vienna (at first in collaboration with Breuer, an older colleague) saw the birth of his creation, psychoanalysis. This began simply as a method of treating neurotic patients by investigating their minds, but it quickly grew into an accumulation of knowledge about the workings of the mind in general, whether sick or healthy. Freud was this able to demonstrate the normal development of the sexual instinct in childhood and, largely on the basis of an examination of dreams, arrived at his fundamental discovery of the unconscious forces that influence our everyday thoughts and actions. Freud's life was uneventful, but his ideas have shaped not only many specialist disciplines, but the whole intellectual climate of the twentieth century.

3.0 out of 5 stars Obituary of Charcot toward the study of hysteria., 3 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Included in this volume is Freud's obituary of Charcot, whom Freud had studied under in France in Oct. 1885 - Feb. 1886. It was during this period that Freud directed his attention primarily toward the study of hysteria which, while not at all the extent of his work, is perhaps what he is most famous for. In the various works of this volume Freud confidently and categorically defines what to him are the most fundamental manifestations of psychic trauma; hysteria, obsession and compulsion anxiety, and paranoia. There is some work on the physical aspects of trauma. He also 'remarks on the neuropsychoses of defense' which is similar to his later usage of repression as being caused by inappropriately early sexual experiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freud in the Twentieth Century, 13 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Who's the Viennese psychiatrist who's a sex machine to all the chicks? (chorus) Freud! Damn Right.

Shaft analogies notwithinstanding, this twenty four volume set could be the greatest work of the past century, give or take a few years. Psychoanalysis, unlike most intellectual movements of the twentieth century, has had a profound impact on the way people actually speak and think about issues. Do you laugh at PHALLIC SYMBOLS? Is your boss really ANAL? Do you ever do things UNCONSCIOUSly? Yeah, I thought so. Freud and his followers have effected virtually every field of discourse on what it means to be human, in the Western World, and beyond. Although, given the pricetag, one might have to ask Santa for this stocking stuffer....
